Colin Powell's America 10:20pm on 20 Oct 2008 I, too, was very surprised that those comments weren't discussed in the media as thoroughly as his endorsement of Obama. It really cut to the heart of the fracturing republican party. The upcoming democratic rout will hopefully serve notice that their party has become out of line with the American mainstream. For the United States, a center-right country that was founded upon the ideals of limited federal goverment and intrusion upon the daily lives of citizens, to give control of congress and the presidency to the party that argues for a larger federal government is remarkable.

General Powell devastatingly exposed the narrow-minded and backward attitudes that have gripped the republican party. In the process, I think he reminded everyone why he has been regarded by both the right and the left as one of our most honorable and respected national figures.

It's been a great pleasure to read your blog as you've traveled our vast country. Like many of the Americans that have been keeping up with you, I've found it fascinating to hear an outsider's perspective as they actually travel the nation.

We so often hear the opinions of europeans that never venture beyond New York, Washington or Los Angeles. Journalists that claim to know and understand America without ever venturing into our interior, which makes up so much of the American mythology and experience. It was refreshing to see your honest and thorough take on our lands.

Unfortunately, I don't really think so. It seems as if the last real political battle has already been fought. The only thing we still witness are the various ways each candidate frames himself/herself.

This is the way a relatively inexperienced candidate can call himself the candidate of change. It's the same way a politician from the party in charge for the last 8 years can call himself the candidate of change.

I just finished '1984' again, and I was struck at how our parties use political slogans very similar to the ones the party did in that book. Just how "War is Peace" and "Freedom is Slavery" were repeated until they were fact in the book, slogans like, slogans like, "We can't stand 4 more years like the last 8 years," "McSame," "Country First," "The Original Maverick," etc are shoved down our throats until we repeat them like parrots.

Both parties are guilty of this. I don't think either one really trusts the people to make a decision if their reasoning can't fit on a bumper sticker. And that, my friends, is a shame, because what does it say of us?

A great reading list 7:41pm on 09 Sep 2008 Why all the ripping on Justin for the post? He made it quite obvious that the list isn't true. I'm assuming it was posted merely for discussion's sake, seeing as how we haven't had a new post for a few days.

It's pretty funny when the right tries to paint itself as the injured party whenever their candidate gets attacked. Meanwhile, they ignore the fact that Obama is continuously referred to as a muslim. Even his slip on sunday created a flurry of additional postings all over the web. The main point is that Palin TRIED to ban some books. She tried to do so on mulitple occasions and attempted to fire the librarian. That's plain scary.

One further note, the 2004 election was determined in large part to the 'swiftboat' allegations online against Kerry. Dan Rather was also pushed out at CBS News when his Bush-National Guard story was put to fire by bloggers before that election.

I'll have to disagree with you there. The internet is young, but it isn't THAT young. It becomes more prevalant/sophisticated daily, but by that logic, this is also the first election where cars are 'up and running.'

regarding your post 346, I couldn't agree more.

A better education does not necessarily mean a more intelligent person. While many intelligent people seek higher education, an impressive educational resume really doesn't tell one anything about a person's actual intelligence.
John McCain's speech - live 04:31am on 05 Sep 2008 That was a really good speech. I can't remember what he said in response to the heckler, but I remember thinking it was a great line. I also loved the part where he said he would make known the congressmen and senators who pile the pork onto legislation. I think the next president, no matter his party affiliation, should make that a priority.

I still can't vote for him due to a number of his views. Most importantly energy independence. How can he continuously say he wants to wean us off foreign oil, and point to wind and solar as ways to help with that transition, when he has avoided voting 8 times to extend the tax credits and subsidies that would expand those forms of energy? I don't get that.

But I have no doubt he would be a big improvement over Bush...just not as big as Obama in my opinion ;)
