Blair and Betrayal 12:06pm on 05 Oct 2009 What an idiotic position for the Tories to hold on Lisbon - having a policy depending on (with respect to the Irish, Czechs and Poles) relatively minor countries in the EU. What's the difference between going back on the UK ratification (and many seem not to realise it has been ratified) if all but one (the Czechs) have ratified and on the other hand all have ratified? It's circus politics designed to appease the core-anti Europe brigade but is utterly meaningless.
Question Time and the BNP 12:14pm on 07 Sep 2009 The BBC has frequently invited members of the Orange Order to appear on QT panels. Wiki this organisation and you will find that it excludes Catholics from membership and expels members that attend Catholic services like weddings or funerals ie an Orange Order MP will be expelled if he attends a Catholic constituent's funeral.
Of course the BBC also invites Sinn Fein but at least they have renounced violence and indeed strongly condemn violence now. No such reformation of the Orange Order.

Iraq enquiry row rumbles on 1:02pm on 24 Jun 2009 House of Lords Reform

There are nearly 800 members of the House of Lords, most either appointed or inherited. What a disgrace in 2009.

We should have fixed 4 year terms for the House of Commons and the same for a 100% elected House of Lords with elections every 4 years, 2 years after the House of Commons elections.

If members of the House of Lords are so valuable or important, then they can try to convince the electorate of that.

We need and deserve better in the 21st century. Who are we to criticise Iran for suppressing the people's voices when one half of our system is unelected and in part (and I am referring to recent revelations about cash for questions/influence) corrupt?
A mountain to climb? 10:30am on 24 Jun 2009 IRAQ INQUIRY

I cannot find anywhere the Terms of Reference for the forthcoming Inquiry. I can see criticism and discussion of the terms but not any allocuted statement.

Whilst we may want to know whether our soldiers have the correct equipment and whether the planning of post-conflict Iraq was competent, I think most people want to know whether the actions of the government and intelligence services in reaching the decision to go to war were competent and honestly undertaken, there being widespread suspicion that the decision was prejudged and that the UK was leant upon by the US.

Evidence into Intelligence gathering and briefings are likely to be held in private lest our enemies discover our capabilities and techniques and unless we know the information upon which our politicians acted we are unlikely to be able to judge for ourselves whether the decision to go to war was reasonable.

This means that the Chairman must be someone whom the public believe will ferret out the information and whom we trust will ask the questions and arrive at the conclusions that the puiblic would if they had access to the information.

For that reason I would like to see someone whom we know to be sceptical of the decision to go to war and as gauche as it may seem I would like to see George Galloway behind those closed doors asking the questions.

If we don't have faith in the Chairman then in 12 months time when we get the report which is likely to say the Government acted reasonably based upon the confidential information in front of it, the suspicion will linger that yet again we have been deceived.
MPs' expenses finally published 12:58pm on 19 Jun 2009 Okay, Parliament is just not getting it with respect to expenses. What next? Well with my next tax return, I will be claiming for a sat nav unit (ala Tim Loughton MP), digital camera (ala quite a number of MPs), subscription to Private Eye/Spectator (ditto), trouser press (ala Chris Huhne), various books that have a hint of relationship to my job. If MPs can get away with claiming these items are wholly and exclusively for their use in the course of their work (the same standard applied by HMRC) then why can't I? If and when HMRC decline the allowability of such claims for me, then presumably they will apply the same standard (and in retrospect) to MPs. I recommend all voters to do the same.
Time for Labour to come clean over cuts 12:12pm on 18 Jun 2009 Andrew, please don't accept the "here are 1m documents so some of course will fall below the transparency test" - where is the partial postcode we were promised by Harriet Harman? Also looking at one MP's expenses, Greg Clark, there appear to be several missing invoices and receipts, by which I mean there is an expense submission form setting out totals but the attached invoices don't add up.
Perhaps the Daily Telegraph should publish its own records with redaction only for security purposes.
