Maginness is right to condemn these recent xenophobic attacks.

While back home at Christmas my wife, who is from Kosovo, was racially, verbally abused by all walks of Northern Irish life. From kids on bikes to middle aged women from car windows. Though not surprisingly, only when out alone.

Clearly I can't mention what she was called even by using stars, hyphens, spaces and other methods of partially concealing these hateful verbal attacks. Fair enough. They were very wide ranging and included some attacks that were somewhat surreal in content. You'll just have to take my word on that.

These recent attacks on homes would suggest that dealing with the legacy of a hate based culture, will require more than devolution and more than an SDLP Justice Minister.
Ground Zero 09:38am on 16 Mar 2009 Sorry Mark, I can't think of any. Places that is. Places that are shared and have any relevance and importance. If they were important or relevant they would have long ago be appropriated by one side or the other, as their territory.

The Eames Bradley suggestions are somewhat ahead of their time, I fear. We are a very long way from thinking that the mother of a Shankill bomber is the same as the mother of a Shankill butcher.

I haven't been to St Paul's in NY but I have a suspicion that when the people there told their story, they may have left out the parts about the American Sikhs and Hindus who were targeted for 'retaliation' attack, in the ignorant assumption that they were Muslim. I doubt they included any information about torture and inhumane treatment at Abu Ghraib prison or the weekly bombing of civilian population centres in Iraq, during the years of 'peace' between the Gulf Wars.

The American's suffered attacks from outside their community. They can create any insipid and nonsensical version of history they want to. Not so easy for us. Every 'hero' we have has the flip side of being a monster and every 'moderate', a traitor. We have an uneasy and cynical relationship with our history and it's creation. I think this makes us, in some ways, luckier than many.

Shall we look back at events in Northern Ireland over the last two years and see who has died and who has suffered and who exactly you and FermanaghU' have 'reached out to'?

FermanaghU' talks about 'expressing his sympathies' and I think he hit the nail on the head with that. If these comments of support were genuine then they would be universal, they would be something extended to people outside your perceived in-group. But they aren't. Perhaps you and FermanaghU' wrote personally to the family of shinner Ivan Barr last year and expressed your 'sympathies'.

I feel that the truth is that you and the others are more concerned about the way these people died than the people themselves or their families. You are motivated to make these territorial grunts by your fear of republican violence. Dressing this up as compassion for strangers, as I have already said, insults us all.

All right thinking people will feel disgust at the murders, will feel frustration, will feel empathy for the families and friends and will feel shame, that our community killed someone who was dedicated to serving it, killed two young people who had come here to work.

FermanaghU' talks about having 'no other choice', he talks about his needs. On some level, even he is aware, that these comments are for him, for his good, not for those who have suffered. This is not expressing sympathy and empathy, this is putting a flag outside your house in July.

Suzy, I don’t know much about you at all. You seem pretty sure you know all about me. I don’t share your view of Northern Ireland. I don’t see two communities, I see a single community, a single society. I feel the people who churlishly argue over Irish language acts and eleven plus exams are also culpable for these crimes. The lunatic dissidents are facilitated by the vacuum caused by the very typical, sectarian and in group mentalities of N.I.

I don’t know what your Thursday the 12th of March involved Suze but I’m sure it didn’t involve a mass grave. Mine did, consider yourself lucky.
Another grim day 08:53am on 11 Mar 2009 I find the offers of 'condolences' for the bereaved, that have appeared on this forum during the last couple of days, to be idiotic.

Do posters think that the condolences of a complete stranger, a private individual who carries no office, represents no one but themselves and who did not know the people even existed prior to their deaths, will mean anything to the bereaved families?

33 people died yesterday in Baghdad, no mention of compassion for their families and friends. I do not intend to lessen the tragedy of the cowardly murders of the two young soldiers and the police officer, in any way. However I feel that these exhibitions of faux grief and compassion have more to do with political posturing and in-group mentality. You are stating the obvious! and to do so insults us all.

Don't you mean his body as a metaphor and for what? Sad to see such an ego centric sculptor and one, not without talent, brought low and to the brink of Performance Art.

You suggest that a Noel Edmonds / Ant & Dec style TV stunt, involving members of the public standing on a plinth in central London, as a "hugely ambitious" idea. Bonkersthink! What does this comment suggest re the state of art in your country.

The thought of someone writing musical score 'transliterations' of Rothko's work (or any other visual artists) is ridiculous, to say the least. Gradually it becomes irritating. I'd like to ask Mr Aitchison what he thought was missing from Rothko's paintings that he could furnish with a score.

Aitchison says he began by drawing on manuscript paper and previously has used geometric shapes of notes to convey some of Anthony Gormley's work. As I read this I am air punching his absence in the face. :)
Still waiting... 07:50am on 13 Jan 2009 Davidson is right, the Scotts would do better to spend their money on living Scottish artists. Titian's work should be in a museum. A Titian museum along with, his old clothes, knick-knacks and any other historical artifacts that may remain.

Art is not a corpse and galleries are not sepulchures.

bonkersthink! this is not the bbc comedy awards, brilliant art wins the turner prize, not "brilliant artists". I can assure you that the vast majority of "brilliant artists", who fall within the turner's selection criteria, have neither won it nor been short listed.
Adams and the Afrikaners 08:47am on 14 Nov 2008 there is clearly something very broken with unionism as a political force. it's all very well for supporters of unionism to fire insults at adams but the fact remains that outside this small place, in the wider world, his words ring true. the forced coalition and the assembly itself is becoming a machine to generate rope for unionists to hang themselves with. we have had 'die groot krokodil' maybe what we all need now is a F W de Klerk.
