Too many EU plumbers? 10:52pm on 29 Nov 2008 Jukka seems to be an oldfashinoned unapologetic elitist who really believes that politicians are supreme beings.

Look, Jukka, I've spoken to some of the socalled parliamentarians here in the Netherlands, and have found them to be utterly ignorant of all things EU.

Fact remains, the EU is a direct attack on parliamentary democracy by the political elite. It is in politicians interests to make the EU as big as possible and as undemocratic as possible, whilst all the time keeping the charade of the EU parliament (not a proper parliament) going.

Unlike what you seem to suggest, people know what's best for them and do not need some politician, bureaucrat or 'progressive' elitist to decide what's best for them. National parliaments neither asked for nor were ever given a mandate to transfer their powers to unelected kommissars in Brussels. There is no mandate for it but its happening precisely because mainstream politicians are one of the few groups that benefit from the EU.

the Eurobarometer is notoriously biased and unreliable, and always gives what the EU commission considers to be the 'preferred' answer. Didn't the Eurobarometer also say France and Netherlands would overwhelmingly vote for the EU treaty called 'constitution'? They only poll pro-EU types! Of course, we voted against the antidemocratic treaty called 'constitution' but the traitor politicians and their acolytes passed it through anyway under a different name 3 years later. I do hope they will one day have to answer for their treason, as all national politicians who betrayed national democracy to the antidemocratic EU Reich ought to.

you are right, in the late 1920s and early 1930s the democratic process of Germany was undermined, and eventually opened the door for its own destruction, by Hindenburgs appointment of herr Hitler to the chancellorship.

We are witnessing a similar thing these days. The antidemocratic EU and its democracy-hating acolytes have already succeeded in taking control of 85-90% of the legislative process and transferring it to Brussels into the hands of the EU Politburo (commission) and the EU Council who can combine to make laws that no parliament is allowed to scrutinize or reject. We are witnessing the de facto destruction of parliamentary democracy.

But the EU supporters are blind to the reality. And also, they don't realize that removing vetoes is removing sovereignty and denying a nation the right to make its own laws. A countrys population could be 99% against a law but they and their elected parliament can now do absolutely nothing to stop it. That is not very democratic is it?

I'd be for some form of federalization if it was done with a popular mandate (to be given in advance, not after the fact). But I a completely opposed to the antidemocratic EU. It is unreformable. And EU-philes simply won't admit it.

what a shame that your idea of EU/federalism clearly does not include (parliamentary) democracy, but instead rule by decree by Brussels' unelected crowd.

Well, I am all for that! Let's start by cutting the EU which is a massive overhead. The layer of government called EU isn't needed at all.

For example, why should we Netherlands pay into the system, and then get some 85% of that back in the form of subsidies? Couldn't we cut out the middleman, save on overhead and not use the EU for that at all?

And considering the degree of de facto control the EU has over policy areas, many national bureaucrats are effectively working carrying out Reich directives. That 'the EU is not bigger than a medium sized citys bureaucracy' is not true at all.

I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiment of there being way too many international institutions and all that. But one note: the EU is most decidedly NOT an institution. It is a layer of government (an embryonic supreme goverment of Europe).

if the press honestly and truthfully reported on the EU, there would hardly be anyone left who supported it.

If people only knew just how parliamentary democracy has been undermined. Legislative powers have been moved from the directly elected national parliaments to a combination of unelected EU politburo kommissars and the EU council. Via the EU council, government ministers have legislative powers and can bypass the national parliaments on most subjects. No elected parliament can effect control on the EU legislation or do anything to change it. The national parliaments are powerless, and 27 countries populations have been betrayed by politicians whose only interest is making the Reich as big as possible.

The EU is only beneficial for one group: politicians. Once one has an EU job, one gets double pension and doesn't have to pay income tax at all. And the best part: you don't have to be elected either. So it is only natural that mainstream politicians support the EU, its their gravy train after all.

The EU, via CAP and CFP has utterly devastated tens of thousands of African farming and fisheries communities and is the #1 reason of the continueing poverty and misery of Africa. One could almost argue that the EU is racist. Not content with destroying many livelyhoods in Africa, the EU demanded that Indonesia increase production of biofuels (which can only be done at the expense of, you guessed it, food production).

Futhermore, the EU props up the failed and corrupt VAT system. VAT fraud is getting out of hand. VAT should be abolished and replaced with a sales tax to be levied only when selling to consumers. But the EU gets income from VAT so it is in its interest to prop up the VAT fraud.

There is not one single benefit the EU claims that couldn't also be had with intergovernmental cooperation. Not one.

The EU parliament may be 'elected', but it is by no definition democratic. It can't do anything that the Politburo and Council don't also agree on. And also, it can hardly be called a parliament at all. More like a beefed up advisory council. The legislative powers should only be at the level of the national parliament. After all, we dutch elected our national parliament 100%.

It is an utter disgrace that the Fourth Reich is using the natural phenomenon of climate change to seize more control and power for itself. Climate change is a natural phenomenon and everyone except lying politicians who want new taxes knows this.

Nowhere can it be seen clearer that the EU is thoroughly undemocratic then here. EU ministers go to Brussels and together with their EU politburo (commission) friends they make legislation and decisions which are not subject to any democratic/parliamentary scrutiny. Only through the antidemocratic EU could they have done this. Because as I said many times before, legislation and decisions made jointly by the EU politburo and the EU council is not subject to meaningful democratic/parliamentary scrutiny (queue EU loving crickets chirping, as they ignore this fact about the EU being fully antidemocratic and destroying parliamentary democracy as we once knew it).

And on a different note. It is quite unbelieveable how some people seem to think the EU is a free trade zone. It is nothing of the kind! The EU is a customs union which doesn't hesitate to destroy the livelyhood of African farmers and fishermen to protect its own inefficient policies.

Finally, it is very frustrating to see the EU destroying livelyhoods in so many policy areas, and screwing everything up for most people with their ridiculous 'enabling act-esque' one-size-fits-all solutions to every 'problem' and yet the media (such as the BBC) utterly fail to attach the blame where it belongs: with the antidemocratic EU. The BBC of course takes money from the EU which ought to be considered bribes. No doubt that it is official policy with the BBC 'never question the EU' because the BBC apparently doesn't like parliamentary democracy but it does like the EU politburo legislating without a mandate or without democratic scrutiny.

Not content with destroying the fishing waters in Europe, the EU decided to bribe corrupt African governments to fish the African fishingwaters empty too, thus destroying the livelyhood of tens of thousands of African fishermen and their families (and to consider, that with the CAP the EU had already destroyed the African farmers by dumping excess food at heavily subsidized prices in African markets.

How can anyone support this antidemocratic EU which (through CAP and CFP) has caused so much hunger, misery and poverty in Africa? Do people who love the EU really hate Africans? Could it be that they consider Africans to be lesser people? It wouldn't surprise me, EU lovers have contempt for democracy, the will of the peoples and also for those countries in another continent than Europe. In order to build their antidemocratic EU, they are willing to destroy anything in their path.

By the way Mark, why did you fail to mention that the EU is almost 100% to blame for this problem?

What is it about elitist rule and sidelining parliamentary democracy that tickles your fancy so much?

And Barroso leader of the free world? That unelected piece of fertilizer? He's got no mandate, he's unelected and is not subject to meaningful parliamentary democratic scrutiny. He's more like a premier of some politburo.

Memo to elitist democracy-hater: EU is not Europe. EU is undemocratic. There's no mandate for political integration. Most countries would have voted no to the Lisbon 'enabling act' treaty.
