The jeers and not enough cheers in Turin 3:32pm on 09 Mar 2009 I like the blurb underneath the heading for this blog on the athletics homepage:

"You can't deny his performance but most people seem unhappy with Dwain"

Who would most people be then?? The BBC commentating team? Or the Italians who conveniently took advantage of DC's past to try to stake their claim on the gold medal and, most likely, would have cheered had an Italian not been on the podium??
The jeers and not enough cheers in Turin 09:46am on 09 Mar 2009 I'm so embarrassed by the way the BBC has treated Dwain Chambers. I have never experienced any other athlete receiving the treatment he has received, and I believe it is because he admitted his mistake, no way would the same thing happen in court! Judges and juries are more leniant with people who plead guilty and show remorse and a willingness to reform and be reinserted into society, as in the case of criminals. Dwain Chambers has never at any point been given this opportunity.

I would like to point out that, around the same time, Janine Whitlock tested positive for nandrolone...served her 2 years, came back to the sport, and nothing was ever mentioned...possibly because she denied it. And what about Carl Myerscough? Nothing as derogatory about his character is ever mentioned.

I know the response to this will be that Dwain Chambers has put himself into the spotlight so he's obviuosly going to receive critiscism. I believe that he was forced into the spotlight because he didn't just test positive for nandrolone, but for THG, and because this drug formed part of the Balco scandal and seemed more sneakier than other drugs, which made the UK slam him more than other cheats. Is testing positive for THG any more sneaky than nandrolone? They're both drugs.

Dwain Chambers has been made a scapegoat by UKA and, in turn, the BBC in order to distance themselves from the negative reputation that the USA has made for itself with the Balco scandal, and before that the non-existant drug testing. However, in the process, they have helped to effectively ruin what remains of Chambers' career, a career which is now showing him to be the athlete he always had the natural potential to be. If they were to show the same condescending attitudes to other drug cheats like Myerscough, and previously Whitlock then maybe we could really be talking about the take-no-prisoners policy of UKA, instead everyone is talking about the prejudice of both UKA and the BBC.

Sprinters Ahoy! Bolt and Powell make a splash 10:09am on 25 Jul 2008 After these Olympics maybe we'll have a better idea as to what is more conducive to an Olympic gold, Maurice Greene's strutting or Bolt and Powell's shyness.

I say this because Greene was an amazing competitor. I remember in Edmonton how he limped straight after crossing the finish line after winning in 9.82s or how he got a bronze in Athens after everyone writing him off.

So far, at least Powell's shyness has not shown itself to be effective as regards winning in the big competitions.
Dose of long jump joy relieves Chambers headache 4:39pm on 21 Jul 2008 I am not against lifetime bans from the Olympics for drug-cheats. However, I think the fact that the BOA has a lifetime ban while the IOC nor the IAAF do paints a ridiculous picture of these organisations for not being stronger than it's members and of the UK for appearing to take the issue too far.

Lifetime bans could definitely be effective, but as long as they are not a regulation imposed by the IOC I don't think they should be implemented by naitonal olympic associations.
