The Last House on the Left but one 00:28am on 10 Mar 2009 I obviously haven't seen the film yet (don't plan to) but here's my prediction, based on previous experience.

No, it won't have the weight of the original, for all the reasons you just mentioned.

Yes, it will be just another torture-horror movie. Look at the remake of "The Hills Have Eyes" and tell me that's not exactly what's going to happen with "Last House on the Left."

As a kicker, if you check out the Web spots that have been airing on YouTube, any possible hope you might have for this movie will go down the tubes.

Deep deep down I have a wish that this movie won't completely suck, and that there could be something redeemable about all these remakes. But of course, the truth is that there isn't. I'm not holding my breath.
Back in the 1980s Friday 13th was lucky for some 06:39am on 28 Feb 2009 Dr. K, I could hug you. Thank you for validating my line of thinking on horror movie remakes (and new horror). Not novel, not original, can in no way improve upon the old stuff because what made the old stuff good can't be replicated. I've had this mulling around in my brain for quite some time, so it's nice to hear a professional say it!

Based on your recommendation, I watched "The Long Good Friday" this weekend. I wanted to thank you for letting me know about such a satisfyingly entertaining movie (I even loved the 80s-tastic theme tune). Actually, it helped me get over a breakup! Nothing helps you get past awkward feelings like watching Hoskins and company stab, shoot and interrogate. Thanks, Mark, for making my weekend a little more bearable.

I'd like to ask you what your thoughts are on the upcoming remakes of "Last House on the Left" and "Friday the 13th" (but particularly LHOTL). I saw the trailer for it the other night, and it looked like more of the recycled ultraviolent meaningless grunge I've come to expect from horror remakes. My theory is that Hollywood horror remakes will always be unredeemable and awful because they lack the cultural context that the original films had.

Whaddaya say, Dr. K? Are there any horror remakes that are actually worth watching? Is it possible that the new "Last House" will be every bit as relevant as its original? Or will it fall into the category of "The Hitcher" and "The Hills Have Eyes?"
The Kermodes: Make Your Case 6:09pm on 08 Jan 2009 No Kermode category for best doc? I agree that you should start one, since it seems like year after year the Academy overlooks artistically interesting examples of documentary storytelling and nominates only "serious" (read: political) documentaries. I was SO disappointed that "King of Kong" didn't get the nod last year. But I got to interview Alex Gibney (who won for "Taxi to the Dark Side") so I guess it wasn't all bad.

If you WERE to initiate a best doc category, I'd offer up "Man on Wire" and "Young @ Heart" for your consideration, since both were great movies and I'm afraid both will get the snub come awards time.

My noms:
Screenplay: In Bruges (Martin McDonagh...Wow.)

Best film: Either "The Fall" (if it counts...I think the official release date may have been in 07) or "Ghost Town" (sure, not artistically ambitious, but easily the most satisfying experience I had at the cinema this year). Of course, I'm sure neither of these matches your adoration for "Of Time and the City," but a girl can try, right?
