The truce is over 12:19pm on 17 Oct 2008 I agree with several other comments that the world did not start in 1997. The entire economic and social attitudes of this country were set by Thatcher in the 1980's and we are now paying the price for them. The "greed is good", self, self self, ideas put forward by the Tories have led to many of our current economic and social problems. How can you expect kids bought up in the 80's under such conditions to then bring up their own children in a decent way.

I think Labour has tried to change social attitudes back to a more caring society but unfortunately they fell hook line and sinker for the greedy economic policies.

Until we get back to a more, (dare I use the word), "socialist" way of thinking in our society, as they do in many european countries, then we will never have the type of society and economy that serves the majority and not just the rich few. (and by socialist I do not mean extreme left wing)

David Cameron, as he keeps reminding us, is a big fan of Thatcher, so is not the person to be leading our country to a better future. I find his comments opportunistic and hypocritical in the extreme. I also think he and Osbourne are not intellectually strong enough to be our leaders. Cameron comes across as a nice guy by tory standards, but nice is not enough. George Bush is apparently a "nice" guy!
Who gets nuclear spoils? 4:58pm on 24 Jul 2008 I think it is perfectly sensible for the govt. to put this money somewhere safe for the time being. Markets are far to volatile and insecure at the moment to be investing it elsewhere. The sovereign wealth funds mentioned have made some appalling investments over the last few years. In retrospect 5% would seem good to them.

In response to Cassandretta, there was very little family silver to sell when Labour came to power. Mrs Thatcher had sold everything very cheaply, years earlier to fund her disastrous economic policies
Shocking crime figures 5:02pm on 23 Jul 2008 I would be very surprised if the newspapers give this news much of a mention. Remember they mostly have an agenda to get their Tory mates back in power so spreading good news doesn't suit their needs at the moment. As knife crime has been such a high profile news item recently maybe Mark, you can get this story as lead item on tonights BBC News.
Insurrection at the Proms? 12:00pm on 23 Jul 2008 I entirely agree with 5. Whether to applaud or not should depend on the piece being played. I remember a few years back listening to a Shostakovich symphony at the proms and having no choice but to applaud after the first movement as the music had been so dramatic and uplifting. It was a spontaneous reaction from me and many others. Surely this is what the composer would have wanted. There were some "tuts" from a few around me but I just felt sorry for them for being too uptight to be able to show their emotions. A very English re-action.
Brown is the Fiscal Rules 2:22pm on 18 Jul 2008 What a pessimistic bunch you all are. The first sign of difficult times and the whole world is falling apart. I get the impression you are a bunch of Tory supporters who have been hiding in the shadows for the last 11 years too ashamed to show your faces but happy for your houses to have tripled in value, chuffed that your salaries have increased well above the rate of inflation and ecstatic that you have actually not been made redundant in that time. What makes any of you think Cameron and Osborne will make things better. Cameron was in Lamonts failed and humiliated treasury team in 1992, and if someone could tell me why Osborne should be our chancellor I would be very grateful.
