I know my suggestion is crazy .... but what a bonus in any Test side's top 6 to have a convincing wicket-keeping batsman.. the luxury of playing 5 bowlers. Think Alex Stewart, the extreme example of Adam Gilchrist, what a fine player Mark Boucher has been for the Boks. We don't have anything remotely close.

Boycs story today about Brian Close waiting at the top of the stairs. Steam coming out of his ears, a bunch of fives waiting for the dismissed batsman (was it Padgett?). Going round the back, cadging a fag before having to face the wrath of Captain Close. Absolute classic, had me in stitches ......

I agree completely about the keeper situation. We need to develop Bell in the position. Or send Collingwood away to keeper's school, so we have a convincing test-match grinding keeper/batsman at 6 - with Flintoff at 7.
England bowling lacks menace 8:05pm on 21 Jul 2008 This is a horrendous defeat for the English team, hard to know where to begin.

It's OK rollin over the mediocre West Indies or New Zealanders - different story against battle-hardened sides like SA or the Aussies. Have we forgotten how to apply ourselves in the Test match arena? Do we play too much 1- day cricket? The South Africans play as much of that stuff as we do.

Calling for Vaughan's head is premature, although he needs to start scoring big runs. We need some bite and menace with the new ball, Harmison or Jones to come back. Can Collingwood keep wicket? I'd suggest sending him to the Alec Stewart school of wicket-keepery. We need a grinding run-scoring wicket keeper at six, with Flintoff at seven.
Is Twenty20 too much of a good thing? 8:46pm on 17 Jul 2008 Never seen a 20/20 game, nor do I intend to.

Going back, remember when 50-over international cricket started? The first few World Cup competitions - how exciting it all was watching Test match superstars in the one day format? The administrators got greedy, played too much of it and the format is dying a contrived death. Amidst all the venue controversy surrounding England's winter tour, a full India tour comprises SEVEN (count em') one-day internationals and just TWO tests. Test match cricket is on its knees, desperately needs pitches with pace and bounce to make the cricket interesting. If I have to sit through another 5 day game on a slow, batsman-friendly pitch I'm gonna scream.

Once 20/20 takes over, I walk away.
