Not quite what we thought 10:30am on 13 Aug 2008 I am much less concern about fake imagery to enhance visual enjoyment than fake news that cause wars and racial hatreds. James?

I came from Cambodia and remember well what the American CIA did to my country back in 1970. They overthrown the royal kingdom in 1970 and installed a puppet regime (with rigged democratic election) which was so corrupt and brutal that triggered a civil war that eventual brought the murderous Polpot (or Khmere Rough) in power that subsequently killed nearly two million of Cambodians.

So James (and all good western people), please learn about the history of China before critising their governement and people.

And all sort of strang thoughts have come to my mind...I thought the BBC bosses might decide to take you off air because you start to find out more about China and become too pro-Chinese ...

Limited access 12:47pm on 31 Jul 2008 James, I think you are very silly on this one. It may be only for Britich audience who know little about China (I watch your report on BBC 1 last night) but for the Chinese people it just seen unreasonable, offensive and arrogant.

Just ask yourself a question - what should China government allows access to
Falun Gong website which is a banned cult in China?

As for BBC Chinese website, it just shows how much the Chinese government trust the BBC. Don't forget the English version of the BBC was only unblocked a few weeks ago.

Unfortunately, this type of reporting will only arouse suspicions and you are not doing BBC any favour (having said that, I suspect it didn't come from an intelligent guy like yourself. May be it was one of your bosses told you to do it?)
The benevolent emperor 1:30pm on 30 Jul 2008 Don't forget that both "communism" and "capitalism" are western ideas. The Chinese are just smart enough to employ them to suit the conditions of their country.

Ideology is not important to the Chinese as long as it works. Remember the famous quote of Deng Xiaoping? "No matter if it is a white cat or a black cat; as long as it can catch mice, it is a good cat".

Ironically, the advanced nations i.e, the West is still stuck in the ideology war (the Cold War) while the Chinese have move on...
The benevolent emperor 09:22am on 30 Jul 2008 I can understand why Western people view China's Communist system with anxiety and a threat to Western style democracy, and so often caste non-western style system as corrupt and inferior.

The truth is Chinese system has brought Chinese people prosperity and has lifted millions of people out of absolute poverty.

In contrast to rich western countries, the Chinese openly admit that their system is not perfect, while the West sees western style democracy as gospel even though the system has kept many ex-colonies poor and corrupt for centuries (of course this is their fault as they failed to implement democracy “properly” laid down by their ex-colonial masters).

While China openly admits there are corruptions and human right issues, do you seriously believe that western style democracy implemented in South Asia and African countries have less corruptions and human right issues? And do you seriously believe that the parties in charge in those countries care more about the people they govern and not about getting into power so they can share bounties with their friends and relatives? When will the West accept some imperfection in their system?

If you have ever been invited to a Chinese family, you would see how the family want to impress you with all they have achived - their children's education, their wealth, their cooking. This is all about face and showing off what you've got to the visitors and making them as welcome as possible.
