World Cup heaven or hell? 2:34pm on 30 Nov 2009 A few interesting points in this debate. Firstly, the Saffers on here who are saying that because the Cricket and Rugby world cups were a success then so will the Football world cup. Well, I am sorry, but that is like saying that you can direct a blockbuster movie just because you have filmed some footage of someone falling over on your Iphone and uploaded it to youtube!

The sheer scale of the football world cup is only rivalled by the Olmypics. The issues with hotel rooms and vast travel will be exposed - and another issue for the poor teams in group G is that not only will they travel the vast distance, they will also have to deal with one ground 20,000 above sea level and the other on the coast! You watch the balls fly in Jo'berg!

Frankly - and I speak from experience, the SA infrastructure is not good enough to hold this event.

Crime will be a problem. There will be stories. Whether it is a fair reflection is another issue. But the press (especially in the UK) will be waiting for any incident that fulfils their predetermined agenda. The same incidents in Germany 4 years ago would have been ignored.

The English fans will not cause too much trouble. There will be the odd issue, without doubt. But it will be like Japan 8 years ago as not so many will travel and generally speaking most will travel with tickets rather than pitch up in the town for the atmosphere like in France where it did go a little pear shaped.

But I am awaiting the draw with anticipation as I shall be visitng relatives across SA during the world cup.

I ahppen to love the country, but I have to be honest and say that the football will be great, but it will be a bit chaotic in terms of organisation!

While I agree we were routed and got away with a draw, the suggestions you make are typical of Englands problems over the years - radical changes during a series. By dropping all and sundry (flintoff?????) you cause even more problems. Oh and while we are at it, yes, lets change the captain too as that always seems to work.....

And while you suggest dropping Cook & Flintoff and moving Pieterson you lack something in your argument - Replacements?

So for Cook - who? Key?????? Ha, a man who has scored no meaningful runs in two years (runs against surrey do not count) and who can replace flintoff? Two players perhaps?

Look, we were lucky to get away with it. But bar some tinkering this is the best 11 we have available and it is up to them to improve. Wholesale changes would end the series by Saturday.
Success of Sky was never a model for Setanta 10:11am on 10 Jun 2009 a very intersting debate. And despite all the points raised everyone seems t have missed the most important:

Has Mihir Bose used the word "Pyrrhic" for the first time ever on any BBC platform?

Joking aside, Setanta were always going to go the way of ITV digital and for the same reasons. People will not pay additional fees for the second rate stuff.

While Setanta had the US golf, they did not have the crown jewels in the 4 majors and the WGC events.

While they had Boxing, they did not have Hatton.

While they have motor racing, they don't have F1.

And while they had football they had Stoke V Fulham while Sky had Man U v Liverpool.

That is why they failed. If you are going to do it, you need the BIG stuff and they played in the margins.
Millwall strike first but Leeds remain upbeat 8:23pm on 09 May 2009 First some facts. Despite my username, I was there. Kasper was not "pushed". Two blokes did, however get in his face and that is not on. One bloke then threw some - what looked like - sweet wrappers or grass at the keeper as it just blew in the wind.

Is it out of proportion? no. They should not have been on the pitch and certainly not in his face, but by the same token nothing happened.

Now, the poor hard done by Leeds fans who really think they get a rough ride from the media, should really spend more time looking at who they were layinf today. If there is one club who get castigated andthreatened with closure because a meat pie lands on the pitch, while other clubs throw mobile phones at England players, then it is us.

I suggest that had leeds snatched an undeserbed equaliser then nothing would be said at all about the incident.

Fact is, you guys played poorly and are diverting attention.

Now, you are still in this tie and I am certainly not looking up jubilee line closures just yet as our lead could be gone within a blink.

so my advice is stop the paranoia and get over it.
Should there be a winter break? 08:40am on 08 Jan 2009 With the winter break, I absolutley love the idea that we can all predict the exact 3 weeks where bad weather will strike!

We have had perfectly playable january's in the past and frozen February's.

Imagine having 3 weeks off only then for the cold snap to come and suddenly you are playing 4 games a week at the end of the season.

We do not have predictable enough weather to allow for a winter break.

And lengthening the season is no good either as it is too long as it is.

The answer is actually to play more midweek games in September and October so we get to the new year playing 27 or more games so that gives some slack in the winter for weather postponed games and cup runs.

There are plenty of blank midweeks in the late summer early autumn to use.

So you are right as Prestwick is number 2 on the list. However it could be that he means courses on the current roster.

as an aside, I am quite amazed that Turnberry has only been used 3 times.
