Comparing China and Cuba 9:38pm on 03 Nov 2008 It’s good to see the return of the excellent Blog. Nice one James.

The problem, as ever, is with the comments. Ultra-nationalist Chinese with the ever-perpetual bone to pick. Why they visit this blog for a daily dose of anger is unknown to me. Perhaps they feel they're doing their ‘bit’ for China by ranting.

I swear Beijing_2008 is paid by the CCP to put the BBC in its place. Western nations are richer because we were the first to industrialise, modernise, and you have taken your time to copy us! Japan became rich fairly quickly, don’t you think? Why didn’t China? Look for the reasons inside your own country, don’t blame your problems on everyone else, no sane, objective historian blames the developing status of China on the so called “Anglo-French axis of Nations”. Everything about modern China wasn’t determined by the Anglo-Chinese wars!

Furthermore, are you ashamed of having Chinese artifacts on view to the world? Be proud that humans besides the Chinese have the ability to appreciate such exquisite exhibits, please! Are you lacking ‘treasures’ in China?

And xixiiangtianzi, you need to realise that capitalism is not antithetical to socialism.

And Manpet, I know from your previous posts that you are trying to make some point (probably about the ‘evils’ of the British in China… in history), but really, your broken English makes no sense. Keep trying though!

Most of us merely ignore the idiotic ramblings of the more extreme of these people, but sometimes, giving a response is fun. (especially if I get an angry response in return)

Pollution problem 5:51pm on 15 Jul 2008 Those people dismissing these results and the story itself confound.

The Chinese government itself set huge targets, essentially to host the greatest of all Olympic Games. The 'success' of these games therefore hinges on perfection. The condition of the air in Beijing then, makes for an interesting story, and it will also be interesting to see the effects that these emergency measures have.

Forget perfection; for the games to even be appreciated by the athletes themselves, then clean air is vital, and these emergency measures show that China realise this.
Therefore, KrSund70, westerners can only say the olympics were an utter flop if they fail to live up to the standards set by China.

Though I'm sure the Games will be memorable even if patches of smog accompany the Athletes as they compete.

(note to zickyyy and bobchemist: If the air pollution is rampant on the day of the Marathon running, for example, no amount of appeal to the 'annual mean', is going to mean anything. This story, or blog if you will, is about whether the Chinese can reach their goal of clear air in time for the Olympics!)
Olympic security 6:52pm on 14 Jul 2008 Isn't searching for bombs evidence of China's extreme paranoia and yes, perhaps even xenophobia? I struggle to think which 'terrorist' group might seek to bomb Beijing, and none come to mind.

Tibetans, perhaps, but as followers of a peaceful religion, I severely doubt bombs would be used.

Muslim fanatics? Doubtful.

Perhaps then, China fears terrorist attacks on athletes of other nations, which is, I suppose, a possibility.

Traditionally, the olympic committee has sought to keep political issues separate from the international celebration and unity that is the Olympics Games. Yet I'd hate to think these excessive security measures, namely the imposing masses of policemen, are present as a means of intimidation so as to scare away peaceful protest.

After all, civil (and indeed, human) rights are as important as fun and games.

I can't help but think that this 'goal', to:
"fully encourage people to protect the social stability, control and remove the big threats to the Olympic security, and ensure the goal of peaceful Olympics".
Refers to such protest, i.e. to the prevent the utterance of Tibetan independence or the whiff, however faint, of Tibetan Nationalism.
