As if 1989 never happened 3:29pm on 02 Jun 2009 I am not in favour of massacres; but I think that the repression of the students' protest in June 1989 benefitted China.
After more than a century of wars, revolutions and rebellions, China needed social and political peace in order to develop its economy. The student's protest was moving towards anarchy and chaos and the return to the Cultural Revolution that lasted 10 years (from 1966 to 1976) and that killed millions of people.
The repression of the students' rebellion resulted in social and political peace for China and an unprecedented economic growth and development. Thanks to social and political peace which permitted rapid economic development in China, hundreds of millions of Chinese no longer live in poverty and no longer suffer from chronic famine. Would that have happened had the country fell into anarchy and chaos in the name of so called "democracy"?
A rare event... 02:24am on 14 Mar 2009 I had just listened to the press conference given by Premier Wen Jiabao at Xihua.net. It was remarquable and it lasted almost two and a half hour. The questions and answers were translated into english and chinese. Half of the questions came for local journalists and half from foreign journalists including an English, American, French, and South African journalist.
The Premier did not rush the answers but took time to answer all of them, including the question on Tibet asked by the French journalist of Figaro and the depreciation of the Chinese currency asked by the American journalist.
Whether the press conference was staged or whether the questions were presented beforehand to the organisers does not really matter. The Chinese Government did not draft the questions for the foreign journalist and I think it is normal that they present their questions beforehand so that the Premier is not caught unaware and he can prepare his answers.
Tough words on human rights 3:58pm on 27 Feb 2009 I personally think that it is a good thing that both Governments publish a human rights record each year on the other country. Very often, one cannot see his own faults and needs someone else to see these faults. This is the purpose of the reports and each Government should pay attention to the criticisms contained in them and try to remedy or improve.
Not quite what we thought 6:19pm on 13 Aug 2008 If I had a marvelous voice but not so good-looking, I would have been proud to sing to a couple of billions people without showing myself. I would not have felt bad or cheated at all because I would think that billions of people had admired my talent.
