Leipzig: Town of economic progress and social divide 1:55pm on 30 Oct 2009 Franz: I just stumbled across your blog and I'll have to keep following it. I look forward to hearing more about the subject of East/West in Germany and how things are going after 20 years on.

It was nice to hear the opinions of the next generation of kids. I attended school in Leipzig in 93/94 and that wasn't the prevailing opinion amongst students I knew then. Coming from Canada at the time, I knew little of the unification process and it's impacts but found out first hand some of the issues. I remember thinking at the time it would take a generation change for true unification to be achieved. It's disappointing to hear that wage differences still exist and that unemployment remains high. However, Leipzig is a great city with great people. I look forward to getting back there someday.

Testing times for Van Gaal at Bayern 5:48pm on 29 Sep 2009 Gomez flopping is a matter of opinion. He's missed some big opportunities in front of net. However, he's still Bayern's top scorer at this point and has 6 goals in 10 games. Tymo has started out slow, but he's new to the team. I thought he played his best game yet against Hamburg, was disappointed he was substituted.

As for the Hamburg game, they went down but they played some pretty good football. Some of the best I've seen them play over the last couple of years. They deserved at least a draw (had more possession and won more of the 1-on-1 challenges), but that's how football goes. They played a new tactical system in that game, and had 3 twenty year olds in the lineup. I think Bayern are just beginning to warm up.

Remember last year's supposed 'poor' Bayern still finished 2nd (3 pts. behind Wolfsburg), their 'poor' defence still conceded only 5 more goals then the team that conceded the least (BL is a high scoring league) and in the CL only Barca scored more goals and the only game they lost was against Barca, the team most could not beat (the eventual CL winners). If that's what a 'poor' Bayern can do,then it will be interesting to see how well they do when they start firing on all cylinders.

I don't think a loss to Juve tomorrow will dent their CL campaign. It may be detrimental to their confidence, but it's only one game, the season is long. Whether you lose 2 games now or two games later, it's still 2 games. Currently in the BL Leverkusen and Hamburg haven't lost yet. If they continue through the rest of the season like this, then kudo's to them, but both teams have traditionally started strong and fade by the winter break.

President's back to school message 5:03pm on 08 Sep 2009 Now the same folks that have no problem using 'Nazi' comparisons when describing the national healthcare issue in public, are claiming a speech to public school children is 'indoctrinating' them into socialism? Did I just wake up and find myself in 1950? Sorry, but this is ridiculous. I also don't find anything wrong with the wording 'helping the president'. What's wrong with suggesting to the country's leader ways to help better it? I do believe you could make any suggestion, regardless as to whether or not it is from the conservative or liberal point of view. I doubt very much though that young children out there in the U.S. have a concept of the differences between these yet.

This is only any issue with those making it one. I believe people of the centre-left/centre-right variety need to speak up more. Our complacency is allowing the narrative to be taken over by extreme elements on both sides of the political spectrum. Debate over important political issues is one thing (ie: healthcare), but discussions like this seem to distract from more important topics.

For me, I go back to 1988 and the Meech Lake accord. I was thinking about this the other day. Follow the policital history from there, and you'll see where we're at now.

I hear you on the divided country front. It seems to be getting that way here in Canada too. I guess there's lots of blame to be shared for this. Politicians share some, with the ways they try to drum up their support and run their campaigns. However, I'm finding message boards can really be a catalyst for this as well. The internet is a beautiful thing for us to communicate with, but without any civility or respect, things can get out of hand quickly and really push peoples buttons. Anyone can post for a variety of reasons and some of those reasons are strictly just to stir things up. I try my best to stick to the points and argue my view as best I can. I'd rather have debate. But somedays I have to bite my lip looking at the different boards. It's tough seeing some of the things people write. But you have to press on and try to rise above it. Maybe if we could all do that we'd find ourselves getting more things done in government. Disagreeing with others, but respecting those viewpoints.

This is the kind of thing that's happening on the Canadian news sites, and it's a little ridiculous. I would encourage anyone who's interested to read a few different articles from different sources and make up your own minds. Politics are politics, and nobody is innocent. Rather, I'd argue, all parties are guilty. It just depends on which guilty party you prefer.

Myself, I look at the last election with the lowest voter turnout in our history. To me that suggests that people are just tired of our current politicians.

I know what your saying about possibly being able to play more of a leadership role. But I'm afraid the clock will continue to tick and time will expire, so to speak. I've been hoping that Canada would take on more of a leadership role during the current crisis, if our economy is really in better shape than others (as our leaders here lead us to believe). But it doesn't seem that this will be the case. Or at least not at this point. The current government has already stated that they would prefer to wait and see what takes place south of the border before going too crazy with their economic plans. Which may be wise, I'm not sure. We are very interlinked economically with the U.S. I'm not sure if this really hampers us from setting out our own economic path right now. But I don't know all the ins and outs of the economics, so I'd rather not speculate. I think the current crisis has thrown government off as now they have to prepare a budget by Jan. 27 (I believe?), which is only a few days after Obama gets into office. However, in the end, perhaps this is what the majority of Canadians would like. We seem to prefer more of a 'teammate' role rather than a leadership one. People up here are worried about the economy and the steady approach being offered by the Conservative government is winning people over. I'm expecting a conservative majority, probably by spring time. It's a shame though, it all could have been so different.
