Lucky number 1:25pm on 17 Jul 2008 Used wisely, this is be of important good impact, e.g. wealth re-distributions. Rich people can spend a portion of their fortune on *s. This can be quite good for the society.

I would argue that much of the self defensiveness stems from the lack of confidence. This applies to nations as well as individuals. When one becomes more confident, one will be more tolerant towards critial ways. China (and CHinese people) can now handle critical views from oursides much more comfortably than they did before. With the continuous development of the country, I am sure it will be increasingly easier to take negatives views or different opinions.

Therefore I don't feel that the "frustration and anger" resulted from critical views has much to do with pride.

I think Chinese people know the awefulness of the AiR quality. I believe the nation has made a decision collectively (somehow - while it is not a democratic country, but as a Chinese myself I believe this is what roughly most Chinese people want) to strike a balance between development and polution that is different from what people in Western world would like. That's their choice, and people should respect that.

It is also encouraging to see that the Chinese are starting to put a bit of more focus on environment and polution. I believe the shift of balance will happen gradually, when the country becomes wealthier.

I think the organisers can lower the bars if non-violent "incidents" are not counted towards failure. This will allow them more likely to claim that the game is successful when it finally finishes.
Queuing Day 1:35pm on 11 Jul 2008 It is an interesting topic.

I guess it is something to do with supply-demand and social behaviour.

People here in England sometimes don't queue either, but not to the degree that you will typically experience in China. Some commentors mentioned Japan. I was there several times. Morning communiting was always horrific (too many people), but people tends to queue up properly (maybe not always a strict 1-line queue).

I think the eduaction and queuing forcement will help. Eventually people's behaviour will change, but it may take long time.
