Not everyone's a fan 4:27pm on 14 Nov 2008 Tory Central Office and the Daily Mail & Express must have an army of writers knocking out these posts everyday!!

Or they are middle-upper class Thatcherite Tories who dislike Brown as they fear a tax hike, and have recently seen their investments and pensions reduce in value, so come here and spit childish vitriol at Brown and Nick Robinson, pathetic.

Yes mistakes were made on the economy, and Brown is probably very aware of these, so he is trying to correct them.
But I've recently visited my brand new local hospital, which is a vast improvement to what it replaced. I was seen very quickly, and will have an Op in a couple of weeks, not like the last time I had to have an Op in 96, weeks wait to be seen, then months for the Op.
My sisters children attend the local secondary school, which has been rebuilt and seen a huge improvement in grades, not like the crumbling mess my brother attended when he was younger.

And this has been done by Labour, after years of Tory neglect and tax cuts that achieve nothing except line the pockets of the rich.
Will HBOS stay independent? 5:54pm on 08 Nov 2008 The Scottish Sirs are living in dreamland if they think HBOS can somehow a) carry on as it did before, and b) remain independant i.e Scottish.
The merger with Lloyds is the only way it can survive, otherwise, as stated by others, it will just be swallowed by Santander, and they've pillaged enough of our banking sector as is acceptable.

Its costing 3 times as much because:

A) Sydneys stadiums/infrastructure for the Games were constructed almost a decade ago, and prices for materials, labour etc have risen since.

B) Alot of the money we are spending for 2012 is going on redeveloping a huge area of wasteland that will become the Olympic Park, and that needs clearing and decontaminating, then regenerating into a new community and the largest urban park created in Europe in the last century.

C) And other costs like the East London Line, Tube and rail improvements

Its well worth the investment, I just hope the stadiums and venues build and material quality are not compromised in a Daily Mail/Evening Standard lead media campaign complaining about the cost. This will last generations!! Think about the bigger picture, not just the cost!!

I'm sure someone like Burma or Sudan could put on a better Games in 2012.

Well everyone is quick to criticise the inclusion of Becks and Leona Lewis, but I haven't seen one decent suggestion of what/who they think should be used to represent the UK in the handover ceremony instead?!?
People hark on about our glorious past, fine, we'll reanimate Churchill and get him to march on draped in a union jack to the sound of the bagpipes, whilst a squadron of Spitfires perform a flypast.

The same for Beefeaters and military marching bands, thats the FIRST thing people think off when they hear UK or GB.

We need to show a new, modern, relevant side to Great Britain, of which we have lots of!! Our music, fashion, design, dance etc industries are trend setters and world leaders!!

Its just a shame alot of our fellow Brits have their heads too buried in the Daily Mail and the past to ever notice it....its 2008, not 1908

Its about creating buzz and excitement for 2012, which I think this will.
But I agree, why does our tabloid press feel the need to "exclusively" reveal plans and details of events well before they happen?
Opening ceremony sneak preview reveals China's power 2:09pm on 06 Aug 2008 It does appear that some people take any form of comment or analysis on China, be it fair, negative, or just different to what is produced by the State, as personal criticism of the whole of China.

I for one am looking forward very much to the opening ceremony, I'm sure it will be an amazing spectacle. But you can't host the Olympic Games, the biggest sporting event in the world, and expect everyone to be in complete agreement with you, and not offer any critique or comment.

I can't imagine how they would cope with the negative attitudes of some of our own media here in the UK regarding the 2012 Games!!

Its not all Govt's fault, when you only have a few construction companies large enough to deal with a project this size, who secretly meet and decide to create artificially high bid prices, or worse massively under estimate to get the contract, and think its their chance to milk the bottomless State coffers for all their worth? All in the knowledge that they can get away with it, as the Govt won't want to cancel the 2012 Games due to rising costs, or any other major project they work on
Legacy worry over London pool 09:10am on 17 Jul 2008 London clearly needs a world class swimming venue, and this is it.
And the legacy is the conversion of a contaminated wasteland in East London into the largest urban park built in Europe in the last century. That is something to celebrate, and would only be achieved by something on the scale of the Olympics
Hot air or a wind of hope? 5:07pm on 13 Jul 2008 I think alot of people here in the UK still view Europe and its leaders as wanting to take over this sceptred isle and make it a colony.
We have lived off the back of Empire and under the umbrella of the USA for long enough, and our influence is waning. The French, Germans, Spanish etc all know that alone we are weaker, but together we still have a strong voice and can compete with Russia, China etc.
Yes the EU has alot of problems, corruption etc, but what will we achieve and change from sitting on the sidelines, sniping and moaning?
