You need to do a bit more spying around Stormont!

The reason Robinson can think about devolving policing & justice (whenever that happens) is that he doesn't have to worry about SF ever holding the position.

That's already been sorted out and neither in the first term, nor any other will SF get the post thanks to the DUP veto.

The money clearly is a very big issue however - and again were it not for the DUP then the other parties would all have agreed for devolution to take place and we'd be debating which hospitals to close in order to fund police overtime.
Give Bill A Break 1:32pm on 04 Feb 2009 Mark - there's a world of difference between the Civic Forum and the House of Lords. The fact that some forum members see an equivalence between the two shows just what level self-importance can reach!

Its fair enough that Bill Jeffrey was appointed on the day the Forum was suspended - how then does he know how great a body it was and why does he put himself up as the great protector of the Civic Forum?

The Scottish Parliament manages real engagement with real people through their petition system - it doesn't rely on a few Quango queens and kings to represent what they think the "ordinary folk" are thinking.

Groups like the CBI, FSB, Environmental NGOs and the rest have massive access to Government. They don't need assistance but measures which could allow community groups, churches etc to influence policy might actually be useful. The Civic Forum might have aspired to do that - but it failed.

Time to quitely give it a decent burial and try something new. Its the 21st Century after all.
Assembly Voting Records 5:03pm on 30 Jan 2009 Last week its the DUP outrunning all the other parties in terms of Committee attendance. Now they're beating the other in terms of voting record.

At least the SDLP recognise that the DUP are running things - as Alex Attwood seems to regularly point out.

However, he doesn't often put forward statistics to prove it.

Gerry "something must be done" Adams - he's not actually going to say what must be done of course, except that its probably the fault of partition and an Irish Language Act would have secured the jobs.

He's turning into a cartoon character of himself by the day.

Which begs the question why she didn't bid for it originally to go into the areas of her budget where she could spend it.

Maggie's miffed that she's not getting the glory for the fuel poverty payments and its plain for everyone to see. She can't even manage consistency in her rantings - on the one hand she wants to welcome the money going on the payments but criticises where the money came from.

The most ridiculous thing was her appearance on Nolan this morning where she said that the money should have came from "the Finance Minister". She clearly does think that money grows on trees - either that or Nigel Dodds has a printing press under his desk and can whip up tenners at a minutes notice.

Above all, if Margaret Ritchie is so angry about this whole issue then why did she vote for it at the Executive? After all, this isn't like the Budget - she wasn't legally obliged to support it. Surely she doesn't want to have her cake and eat it?
The New Force Party 4:07pm on 21 Nov 2008 It would appear Reggie got into bed largely on this promise of a UUP post in the Cabinet in any Tory Government.

That relies on a couple of things
1)The tories getting into Government - still likely but the poll figures just aren't as rosy as they once were

2) The UUs having someone to put into the post - just as well they've got Lords to pick from as they mightn't have an MP to take the post up!

Not sure why there seems to be the belief that this is some bright new dawn for the UUP though. Maybe if the Tories were going to send over a few fresh candidates they might have a chance. After all, its still going to be the same rubbish candidates, with largely the same rubbish policies (well they either keep the current rubbish policies or adopt tory policies of scrapping academic selection etc...).

Reggie and his band of hasbeens are still fairly unelectable no-matter what rosette they happen to be wearing.

Nice re-cap of the past, interesting of course that you don't mention a single thing about the future. A lot like the UUP as a whole then really!

No-one is disputing that the UUP may well have had a fine past. Its just that the last few years have been shambolic and Reggie is taking his party into a large black-hole fast.
At all times... 11:13am on 22 Oct 2008 Sinn Fein don't have a great position to argue that the DUP or anyone else has reneged on 'promises' in the SAA when they don't appear to understand the content of letters which they co-authored.

If SF spent less time whinging about Irish and bothered to read the documents in English which McGuinness has written then they wouldn't land themselves in such a mess.

Or is it that I spy the hand of Adams here attempting to undo what McGuinness has done......

Wouldn't be the first time that the Adams/McGuinness divisions have become apparent.

Nice to see that an Ulster Unionist doesn't know when to stop digging.

We've now had two young male (unsurprisingly) members of the UUP defending Sam Foster and his sexist views. The point has been, and still remains, that those views would never have been made by Sam Foster about a male candidate - from whatever party.

How do male politicians ever "see their family" when they're going to meetings? I'm not surprised that any women in the UUP are reluctant to put themselves up for election, after all, their marital status, whether they have children, and no doubt their hair colour would all appear to be fair game for comment by Sam Foster.

So much for Reggie's UUP rebranding and overhaul. The Oul fellas are still in charge and the women make the tea. The natural Ulster Unionist order has been restored.
Arguing over a cow's rear end 6:25pm on 12 Sep 2008 Given that my last post still hasn't made it on - here's another point for Mark to take a look at.

Jim's statement says "Cows can't be fitted with anaerobic digesters! Nor can anaerobic digestion reduce natural methane production."

However, the clever man, even with all the help from Wikipedia manages to get his own facts wrong.

Anaerobic digestion actually takes place in a cows stomach! There is no oxygen present for the process. Whilst this isn't what Simon Hamilton was referring to in Allisters attempt to be clever he ends up getting his scientific facts wrong.

He also states that it would be impossible to fit a cow with an anaerobic digester. Also whilst difficult, it actually would be technically possible. Cows during research can be fitted with something called a cannula which would allow the introduction of a small anaerobic digester into the stomach

So much for Mr Allister and his detailed agricultural knowledge. Criticising the "urban" Simon Hamilton and claiming to be the font of all knowledge yet all he has shown is that Wikipedia appears to be the font of all Allister's knowledge.
