Hope out of Africa 09:20am on 22 Sep 2009 Three cheers for Rwandans trying to take control of their own destiny, but they must be sure they are not just embracing new technology for the sake of it. There must be some clear and precise reason for choosing this path and they must be aware that there will be many pitfalls along the way as technology continues to change their investment may be shortlived.
More banks, please 12:25pm on 21 Aug 2009 Let's face it Tesco know how to run businesses. The banks only have themselves to blame when money transfers out. The bankers margins,(the difference between borrowing and lending rates) have grown off late, which means customers are now paying for the banks own incompetence! Tesco will force the margins down,and the banks will be forced into taking a long hard look at what they are there for.

Their local titles still have strong circulation despite falling revenues, their problem now is the mountain of debt they now find themselves with and no hope of repaying it....Tim jumped ship when he knew sinking was inevitable.
Interesting times 12:49pm on 05 Mar 2009 Before this fiasco all banks were making a lot of money from us anyway.
Even now they are typically lending at 10%, borrowing (our deposits) at less than 1%, with 2% inflation that gives them a "margin" of 7% to cover their "admin" costs. Put it another way, for every £10,000 they lend they make a gross profit of at least of £700. Much,much more for credit cards.
I for one will not weep for banks.
The £5,000bn bailout 12:05pm on 28 Oct 2008 In the Royal Bank's brand new multi million pound (and that was only the bridge across the main road) headquarters on the outskirts Edinburgh (as is the case with probably all the banks) there is a huge department whose job it is to analyse risk..all day every day...what on earth have they been doing for the last 5 years!
Not a great day 12:30pm on 04 Sep 2008 Even before the Scottish Parliament was built ,the focus has been on the government itself rather thanwhat they are employed to do. So often they fail to see beyond the end of their noses and start doing what we are paying for them to do- improve our lives in a fair and equitable way for the good of the whole of Scotland.
