iPlayer: BBC v BT 12:40pm on 02 Jun 2009 I used to be (until September 08) with BT Broadband on their top level package (Option 3, with "unlimited" downloads), and I was throttled during the evenings - as I'm a night owl it was very obvious when the throttle was lifted at midnight, and my webpages/podcast downloads/streaming videos all jumped back up to their proper speeds.

I was taking part in a broadband speed monitoring survey, and while I can't currently get access to the granular data to show the slowdows in the evenings, you can see the effect that the throttling had on my overall average speed here http://bit.ly/5LFL1 - you can tell when I moved away from BT (the throttling combined with the possibility of being subject to phorm finally pushed me away) to an alternative provider who don't operate caps or throttles, and I now get the speeds that I was paying for, but not receiving, from BT.
N is for networking 09:59am on 30 Mar 2009 Why bother with drilling holes when you can use a set of homeplug adapters? ;-)

These adapters plug into your mains, you plug your network cable into the other side of it, and they use your existing mains wiring to send the signal around your house. Like wireless, it comes in many different (and potentially incompatible) speeds, but the current fastest is homeplug AV, which runs up to around 200 megabits/second.
No defence for 'stealing' music 11:58am on 03 Jul 2008 Everybody has missed the massive irony in this, which is that if you want to avoid the BPI letters, and you're a Virgin Media customer, they are offering an easy way to avoid being caught.

Simply ditch the peer to peer (bittorrent, edonkey etc) and get yourself onto the Virgin Media newsgroup (usenet) servers. Plenty of copyright material to be had there.

Will VM be cutting themselves off from the Internet for making copyright material available?
No defence for 'stealing' music 10:21am on 03 Jul 2008 I can't remember where I saw it (which is a real pain as I'd love to cite my source), but I'm positive I saw a report which showed that people who download music via nefarious means actually spend MORE on compact discs, concerts etc.
