because this is typical of the insidious creep of EU legislation. Its called the Monnet method or engrénage (gearing).

First, the commission comes up with some innocent sounding proposals on a theme which really isn't an EU competence. The proposals will invariably be incomplete leading to demands for more complete proposals. And up steps the politburo (commission) to provide such more detailed proposals grandly proclaiming "the peoples demanded more Europe" (their translation of governments asking for more detailed proposals).

This is how the EU slowly grabs hold of policy theme after policy theme and this is why power transfers have until this day always been 100% a one way street.

In other words: it won't end here. And as always, democracy is nowhere to be seen, nor is parliamentary control.

the Spaniards did not vote in 2005 on the question at hand. Instead, Spain had selfish interests in mind when it voted YES. Spain simply wanted (wants) more of other countries money.

Hardly any of the YES voters understood the Treaty called constitution or had bothered to read it. There was no national debate.

Quite the contrary was the case in France and Netherlands who both had a national debate. And the more people knew about the anti-democratic nature of the EU, the more they were against it.

The combined vote of those who voted against the Treaty called constitution and the Lisbon treaty is greater than of those who voted for it. And even if it wasn't, it still wouldn't matter because increasingly more and more people oppose political integration without 100% democracy.

You Spaniards should remember: your head of state was elected by one man: Francisco Franco.
Queasy over health plans 6:17pm on 07 Jul 2008 What this will inevitable lead to, is German, Dutch and British taxpayers paying for the healthcare of Romanians and Bulgarians (and all those other countries they plan to admit).

I'll have none of that, thank you very much, overtaxed as I am now.

this is no surprise. The system was deliberately set up the way it is to encourage government ministers to take their plans to Brussels and get them approved via that route. Because via Brussels, the EU politburo (commission) and council combined can legislate to their hearts content and not have to bother with the will of any parliament. As I have argued many times, this is why I keep saying that parliamentary democracy is dead, parliaments have no legislative supremacy anymore that has now been given to the EU politburo.

Is that supposed to be a joke or something?

The real fact is, take away the EU and peace would continue and prosperity would increase (except for politicians who would lose many potential cushy jobs). In no way is the EU an essential element for having peace and prosperity.

although we could remove the current national government if it did something we didn't like, we would still be stuck with the treaties they signed against our will. And furthermore, in the Netherlands we voted for a majority of politicians who promised a referendum. Our national politicians have no mandate to permanently sign over their (legislative) powers to Brussels.
The EU cannot be left to politicians because politicians have a vested interest in making it as big as possible. The bigger the EU is, the more cushy jobs there will be for them.

the EU setu-up was deliberately set up in such a way that there would always be more net recipients than net contributors, thus the net recipients would always be able to outvote the net contributors (I believe the current ratio is 20 net recipients and 7 net contributors).
Your comment about Poland supporting the EU doesn't surprise me, Poland of course wants to get its hands on money from the German, Dutch and British taxpayers. You just want the benefits and expect others to pay for it. Same is true for other net recipients such as Spain.

70% of Poles would vote for the treaty? But how many would actually understand that they were voting for striking a blow against parliamentary democracy and for rule by unelected and unaccountable politicians?
And speaking of percentages, how about the 60% of Dutch who would have voted no had they been given the chance? Or the 70% of British? Or the majority of Danish, Swedish or Austrians?

In contact with members of the dutch parliament I have found that they do not understand the Lisbon treaty or even the functioning of the European Union itself.

Furthermore, a majority of them were elected on a manifesto promise of a referendum (which was cancelled apparently after pressure from Merkel, Sarkozy and Barrozo). They do not have a mandate to approve this treaty.

With your "ordinary citizens don't understand" attitude you are exhibiting the typical contempt that many within the pro-EU circles have for the "common people".

The EU is and always has been fundamentally undemocratic. Legislative powers are being moved bits at a time AWAY FROM directly elected national parliaments TOWARDS unelected EU commissioners (EU commission aka EU politburo). Also, through the EU council, government ministers can bypass their national parliaments. Working with the commission aka politburo, the council can legislate bypassing all national parliaments. Government ministers now hold both executive and legislative powers and national parliaments are now mere bystanders. Parliamentary democracy is dead.

indeed, the news from Austria is very encouraging. At last politicians seem to wake up to the fact that (at least in 'old' memberstates) opposition to further political integration may well be an election winner.

Here's the slogan we should use: YES to friendship, YES to economic cooperation, YES to good relations, YES to democratic sovereignty and thus NO to further political integration.

Could the attempt to ram through the Lisbon treaty have been the high water mark of political integration? I certainly hope so.
