I share your concern and shame for the youth of China these days. They dress in stylish Western fashion, walk and talk with Western technologies-cell phones, and yet they have this vitriol about the West. Just because China is coming up economically is no time to be so arrogrant and full of false pride. They seem to want to leave all the problems to CCP and the leaders to work their magic, preferring one party rule without the check and balance, They feel no personal responsiblity in making change. Instead, One lone voice of truth from Hu Jia is condemned by the government with the support of the Chinese people.

Should China become a world power, China needs to act as a responsible member of the World community even more so. Or, China will face internatinal boycott in trade. America consumes the majority of what China produces. There is no guarantee that America will continue to have open trade unless China is a more responsible partner. Since WWII, America has been the only country strong enough to stand up to the Soviet Union's territorial ambition. China in the shadow of the two big powers benefited from this stand-off. But the Chinese Communist propaganda remains as the core belief of young Chinese, that America is the only aggressor in the world.
Nobel prize for dissident? 01:39am on 07 Oct 2008 ErnestU's posting brought tears to my eyes. I am lost for words because of his beautifully written article deserving of being published in an Editorial.

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to people who have done extraordinary deeds, in recognition of their extraordinary humanity. I hope Hu Jia will be the first from China.
Nobel prize for dissident? 02:27am on 05 Oct 2008 Chinese bloggers see Nobel Peace Prize as a conspiracy of the West to humuliate China. It is interesting that Chinese are holding so close and dear of their victimhold. Could it be because they have no other indentity than being victims of the West, fabricated or imagined. It is much easier to blame outsiders than to look within onself for reasons of failures in the midst of the latest national scandals.

Hu Jia in his human rights advocacy is but one single individual trying to push the tide back, and consequently has paid a price for it. What is sadder still is that so many Chinese bloggers blame Hu for his demise. This is so reminescent of decades of Mao murderous rule with no Chinese daring to challenge him. Everyone fell in line supporting the Chairman chanting "Long Live Chairman Mao". Chinese cannot see a rainbow, but just the storm. In this case Hu Jia is the rainbow and the government is the storm, corrupt and secretive, harsh and destructive to the human soul.

Hu Jia would make an excellent choice as the receipient of Nobel Peace Prize. Chinese ought to be proud that there is one citizen who dares to speak the truth. As long as there is just one voice of truth, there will be less tyranny in the world.

This can happen in demoracratic countries also like U.S. - Iraq war. Let us be warned!

But, it is particularly widespread in China. Hope the Chinese will see the Western media as an alternate source of reliable information from now on. As one blogger had mentioned if this contaminated milk scandal had been known to the authority and Sanlu during the Olympic. Wish BBC had talked to Frontera executives then.
All back to normal? 10:19pm on 18 Sep 2008 Of all the comments the one that stood out the most for me is from Shangpied #16. I happen to know intimately what he is talking about.

Yes, it is ingrained in the culture of masters and slaves relations. The people of China willingly allow themselves to be ruled by a few unelected leaders.

The cultural root of the problem goes deeper the feeling insignificant and removed from the mass and therefore the lack of a moral compass. I believe it is about, 1) Language of indirect speech, not willing to point out clearly or give criticism. Certain traditions and etiquette have to be followed in speech, giving it plenty of room for misunderstanding or avoidance. 2) Value of face - as long as one is not discovered for bad behavior, it is anything goes. Chinese are more conditioned by tradtion in social behaviors than by an integrated consciousness of moral standards. 3) Quanxi/connection - the synonom is cronyism and nepotism. Chinese social ties and families are more tightly intertwined, resulting in corruption and incompetence.

These cultural roots give rise to the current morass in China.

Quoting heyone, "The thing is, even if he (Bush) were to stay, it's still because the majority of the American people wanted him to stay."

Not really, Americans had been manipulated and lied to with overblown fear of terrorism.
Democracy got hijacked by lies. If it were not for his constant trumpeting of threat of terrorism-Sadam Hussein, Americans certainly would not have given him the landslide vote. Currently, our greatest enemy is self-deception, not terrorism. Self-deception can lead to the collapse of democratic system, and in our ability to deal with urgent problems we face today. Hope our new president will start his term with honesty and openness, much unlike Bush's administration.

If China were to have democracy, she has to start with transparency and openness of government, a condition which is non-existent at the moment. China's goverment in no way can be compared to the U.S. in terms of power held by the people - democracy.
High-profile resignation 6:21pm on 16 Sep 2008 I finally got it. The only blogger allowed to use sarcasism as a form of expression is James. This form of writing is banned by BBC for fear of competition.
Pandas - a gift from China to Taiwan? 10:10pm on 15 Sep 2008 Quoting ch168,
There is a very important reason why all baby pandas born outside China have to return to China. At the age of 4 or 5, the baby matures. The only other pandas around are the parents. The male baby will mate with his mother while the female will mate with her father.

Oh no, this is bad. The pandas in China kept in the conservation institute will get all inbred in no time if what ch168 said is true. The world will have sickly pandas with very weak genetic variation and their long term survival will surely be in japardy.

Taiwan and China are all one of the same, except for the political leaders. It is really a family fight and so it should be settled with mutual economic, political and social benefits. Short of that, it is a big brother bullying a smaller sibling. By the same reasoning, Tibet is also in the same situation. With more freedom of religion and political autonomy, Tibet most probably will not object to being in the big family called China.

China demands of the world that the DNA material of pandas (all pandas born outside of China) is wholely owned by China. I don't know of any other wildlife been declared as such. China has turned the pandas into commodity, to be traded and bargained and yet protected by pantent and copy right.

China's shrewd policy on making sure no other country will own a panda, even if the progeny is born out of the effort of the local zoo staff, and seeing the panda as a financial resource, is short sighted and may spell the demise of panda conservation in China.

I agree that at the moment polar bears are in imminent danger, therefore zoos and conservation organizations are doubling their efforts in keeping alive the specie. Besides, Canada, Russia, the Baltic States and U.S. had not made the polar bear a commodity. The world would be in big trouble if such magnificent animals go the way of dynasours. We should support the conservation efforts of these institutions whenever possible.
