Afghanistan troops: Decision time for Obama 6:04pm on 24 Nov 2009 Here is a President on the brink of making a very important policy statement. He realises that Afghanistan has to be be protected from al Qaeda and the Taliban. Leaving Afghanistan would be a dereliction of duty as President at all costs.. He came to power promising to free Afghanistan from the tyranny of terrorism. Here is a golden opportunity for him to keep his promise and to rise to the occasion of being one of the finest US Presidents. This statesman has empathy, intelligence and guts.
Will EU flunk its big moment? 6:56pm on 18 Nov 2009 Herman Van Rompuy would be an excellent choice. He has real depth and is extremely capable and unassuming. He managed to bring political stability to the country after Belgium had three prime ministers in one year. He has certainly managed to calm the two major groups in the country, the Flemish and the Wallons. Full credit should go to him Europe definitely needs such a leader. Tony Blair is extremely intelligent but he has far too many detractors who would oppose him tooth and nail. He would be too preoccupied fighting the nay-sayers.
India's 'Twittering Minister' 07:39am on 06 Oct 2009 Mr Tharoor has a refreshing sense of humour. Of course he has to be careful as his stodgy political compatriots in his party are not used to his sense of humour. Politicians in India need to lighten up. Mr Tharoor made his mark in the United Nations and is a rising Indian star. Trying to clip his wings will only turn the Indian political clock back. The Indian parliament needs gusts of fresh air!
Into the bully pulpit 12:25pm on 23 Sep 2009 The President is actually very sincere in wanting to reduce tensions and strive for world peace and understanding.Here is a statesman bending himself backwards to reach out to former foes. But he has also made it crystal clear that by extending the hand of friendship, he is not going to wait indefinitely for nations like Iran, North Korea to react positively Unfortunately global threats have filled the President's plate to the brim. America's multilateral stance is a global opportunity for other nations to be more transparent. America is prepared to go the extra mile in search of peaceful resolution of conflicts. But by no means is America weak. President Obama is encouraging dialogue. But will other world leaders seize the opportunity and see that this charismatic leader is 'genuine' in every sense of the word?
Liveblogging Obama's health speech 04:10am on 10 Sep 2009 A rousing speech straight from the heart. The whole speech was crafted so very carefully appealing to all Americans of every political persuasion to bury the hatchet, stop the bickering and 'make insurance xork better for you'. The line 'if Americans can't find affordable coverage, we will provide you with choice' really hit a chord.
Time to say goodbye 5:28pm on 04 Sep 2009 You did an outstanding job as BBC Washington Correspondent. Your sense of humour coupled with your eye for detail were extremely educative. Of course you will continue to write in the same vein back in the United Kingdom exposing British foibles! Journalists have a lot to learn from you.
Panorama producer imprisoned 1:33pm on 26 Jul 2009 The BBC is doing a great job trying to report a very tricky situation in Iran with intrepid journalists risking their lives to provide the unadulterated truth. The Iranian government is losing its nerve. By arresting competent and highly regarded journalists, it is showing total callous disregard for civilized behaviour. In fact the regime is isolating itself. President Ahmadinejad cannot brook criticism. How long can he survive? If and when he loses the support of the Ayatollah, his days are mumbered!
Republicans' lack of leaders 4:14pm on 25 Jun 2009 Senator McCain was a worthy challenger but age was not on his side. Sarah Palin did not and does not have the necessary Presidential qualities to lead the country. So her efforts were and are clearly a thorough waste of time. The Republicans will need to go through a vetting process where Presidential hopefuls will have to prove their worth. Unfortunately for the Republicans, the pool of worthy candidates seems to be dry! They need a great communicator with facts at his or her finger-tips.
Obama still filling out his team 1:54pm on 21 Jun 2009 President Obama is being very deliberate:certainly taking his time in filling posts. It is far better to have capable people who have been totally vetted for their expertise, suitability rather than having mediocre officials! Of course critics of Obama would like to make a mountain out of a mole hill and critise him to the hilt. But one should realise that President Obama in his relatively short tenure so far has impressed world leaders for his ability to marshal facts and has changed perceptions of America in a very positive way. He has been able to command the respect of world leaders. In respite of the economic downturn, America is on the ascendency with regard to the positive hands-on approach of the President especially on the economy and foreign relations. His key appointees have performed brilliantly so far! America grows from strength to strength.
Obama's Iran dilemma 4:43pm on 19 Jun 2009 It looks as if democratic change does not come easily in Iran. Time is of essence. President Obama has got to engage Iran in substantive talks. It is only through the art of dialogue that relations can be mended. Belligerance achieves nothing. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will have to pave the way for these talks through shuttle diplomacy.Isolating Iran will only create more problems.
