Fixing the Have Your Say fault 09:08am on 07 May 2009 When you get it working again, could we please have a 'have your say' about the DNA database rules?
Also, as comment 244 says, there does sometimes seem to be a problem with some of your moderators being biased in that they allow offensive comments to remain when they agree with them, but not when they disagree with them. I know it's a difficult job, but it's vital that it's done even-handedly. I do realise that's hard in practise, everyone has feeling about issues, but maybe you need to be more picky about who you choose to moderate and select some very calm, dispassionate people for this role.

Mark's suggestion _is_ a common sense interpretation of the stats. I walk my dog in all weathers, but the number of other dog walkers I see on cold wet days is far less than on balmy sunny ones ... a little life experience teaches us that most people don't much like going out in the wet. Why shouldn't that apply to criminals too? They're still people, just not very nice ones. It is perfectly reasonable to suggest they would rather stay indoors when it's chucking it down. Obviously it's not a proven cause and effect, but it's a good contender for an explanation.

When riots erupted all round the country in 1981 there were political triggers, but those same potential trigger events happen month in month out without similar reaction. I said at the time, and I still believe, the main trigger wasn't anything political, it was the weather: hot hot hot.

Are there any answers to the problem of adoptive parents not wanting emotionally damaged children? A woman I know pulled out of the adoption process at the last minute; she simply could not cope with the difficult behaviours of the little boy she was adopting. She didn't have any other children, she had no experience of mothering a child, let alone a damaged one, and I don't feel it's kind of anyone to blame her for not being able to cope. She tried very hard. What's the answer to that? How can adoption of challenging children be supported? There are surely ways that society can take some of the strain so that looking after a damaged child isn't so hard that even loving people are overwhelmed.

So if the UK wants to improve, perhaps we should find out the ways Spain, Greece, Italy, Ireland and Norway handle child abuse.

The gist of the article is that the UK only counts a death as being from child abuse when that it the proven cause. By comparing _all_ unexplained deaths Unicef has more solid statistics, (because obviously the criteria for deciding if a death was from abuse or not will vary from country to country).

I expect it'll be a best seller.
