A tougher approach is needed for punishments of crimes. Prison isn't the answer for everyone. In fact, prison is rarely the answer to any crime. Punishments should be swift and severe in cases like this.

I am 100% sure that if the people who commit heinous crimes like this in Britain were given the same punishments some other countries mete out then they wouldn't ever dream of doing the things they do.

I am also certain that it is time for religious leaders to stand up and gather in their flocks again which would definitely result in stronger families, stronger communities and a stronger country....... eventually.
Baby P - The blame factor 01:13am on 06 Dec 2008 I agree with #3. We really need to put the accountability on the perpetrators and punish more severely. This way I am sure crimes like this will be very much reduced and eventually eradicated.

If we save taxpayers' money and stop fuffing around these criminals and giving them excuses/social workers and paying the social workers high salaries to do so, then we just may have more to spend on care for those really in need.

The punishments don't fit the crimes in Britain at all. We have become far to soft on criminals. I have noticed on my travels that certain countries have armed guards outside banks, school gates are guarded and kids monitored etc etc. The people, especially women, feel safe in this environment and the kids are well cared for.

Where I live, if the unlikely event of a crime like the baby P case cropped up, there wouldn't be any hope of going to prison because the perpetrator of the crime would be counting the days before he/she is hanged.
Hard heads v soft hearts 00:16am on 04 Dec 2008 I remember when James Bulger was murdered. This changed our lives. From that day onwards all downstairs windws and doors were locked when I was alone in the house and my babies couldn't play out in the garden unles supervised by an adult. My teenagers now blame me for terrifying them when they were young about "The Bad People" who might take them away if they didn't stick by my side.

It's not too late to go back to the future. We need to have some old fashioned punishments by the people: - naming and shaming, public flogging, stocks and hanging. Why not? At least then decent humans can enjoy their gardens and parks, go for evening strolls without worrying about who will take their kids away or who would mug/rape them.

Social workers are overburdened and take an awful lot of blame for society's ills. Why can't we take matters into our own hands a bit more without the fear of punishment for doing so?

Where I live (not in U.K. any more) if there were any suspicion of a child being neglected or abused, the whole of the extended family plus the neighbourhood would deal with it. Your child here isn't just 'yours' - he/she belongs to society.

It used to be this way in Britain.

The problem that's hanging around 5:54pm on 02 Dec 2008 I am wondering if this is a new 'problem' we have in today's society? Did we have disorderly teenagers causing mayhem and fear such as knifepoint robberies, graffiti violence, violent attacks on the infirm and women in the past on such a large scale? Did we see this perhaps in very few areas and not so widespread? How did Britain deal with these cases then and now?

There are teenagers who hang around shopping malls, street corners etc. (as we did when we were young when we were not out at discos, ice-skating or whatever our other interests were. Then there are 'teenagers' who, in my view, never had a proper childhood, who do the same but have a twisted idea of what society in general means to them and who have never had anyone to guide them except perhaps older gang members (substitute parenting). They are social misfits.

We really need a Britain today where children are given back the right to be children again and this needs to be a joint effort between schools and parents. We should concentrate less on educating 'children' about their 'rights' and about sex (especially at such a young age) and more on old fashioned morals which worked fine for our previous generations. Discipline is also something even young adults producing these children/teenagers need themselves.

Some form of conscription is needed - either into the armed forces or some sort of social work for those who do not attend school or wish to drop out at 16 with no further plans for training/work.

Maybe it's an appropriate time to mention God in all this too. We have swept religion not only out of the window but have become such a Godless nation that we rely too much on looking up to politicians and film stars to lead us, many of whom lack the good morals that could pick up a nation.

Historically there is a pattern of humanity moving in circles and there is every hope that, with the correct analysis of the roots of the problems we have of teenage delinquency getting out of control, sociopaths ruling our communities and many other social ills, we will move forward again once a plan to tackle these problems with a sensible, disciplined and fearless approach.

We need is to scrap some of the senseless laws that have been introduced in latter years preventing us from having a proper voice.
Why hoax? 00:04am on 25 Jul 2008 A hoax in the news is great fun and we really should lighten up a bit. As far back as I can remember it hasn't been news at all - it's always the same, war, war, starvation, suffering etc.

I think the spaghetti tree programme was by David Attenborough wasn't it?
Controversy and conspiracies II 7:20pm on 02 Jul 2008 If we look back through history there has always been a clash of good against evil.

Right now what we see is the Evil Ones - the Unbelievers - controlling our governments and media.

Civilised people who are raised with good morals and belief in God would never commit such crimes as 9/11, 7/7, invading and destroying generations of fellow human beings, animals, cities, historical monuments and suicidally destroying the World we live in - would we?..... So who are they?...... Definitely not the Muslims because they follow not only the 10 commandments given to Moses but the teachings of Jesus and finally the book given by God to the unlettered Prophet Mohamed (may peace be on them all). In the teachings given to PRACTICING Muslims it is taught that if one really has to fight (to defend their homes/families and land or to crush tyranny) then there are certain rules. "To save the life of one person is like saving the whole of Humanity". "To kill a person is like killing the whole of Humanity" -(qur'an). To injure an animal during a battle or to destroy crops is a sin. To injure and kill the weak, old, young and innocent is forbidden - also mentioned in the qur'an. Even so it is better to settle disputes PEACEFULLY as did Moses, Jesus and all the other prophets before them.

Unfortunately there are a large number of extremely ignorant and easily manipulated young people who are brainwashed by those devils who infiltrate the various communities of (Muslims, Jews, Christians and so on) to wreak havoc. The result is that they are then used to carry out atrocities like 9/11, 7/7 and others: - These devils gain a certain amount of knowledge about Islam, Christianity, Judaeism and so on and twist this knowledge then go to work on the ignorant youth.

One more thing we MUST be aware of is that THEY want education in general to be very watered down, especially religious education.

Funny how a certain Bank pulled their offices out of the World Trade Centre three months before 9th September 2000.

We need facts but then who controls the media?
Happy Birthday YJB 10:58pm on 30 Jun 2008 There was a time when the bobby doing his rounds on his pushbike would clout a youth and send him packing off home if he saw any kind of antisocial behaviour. This often followed by a visit to the home of the youth and a good talking to the parents. He was as respected as was the local clergyman, doctor or teacher and other respectable citizens of the local area.

We have invented so many laws to mend laws that have become out of control - like medicines to relieve the side-effects of medicines. All this costs a lot. Maybe some of the answers could lie in the way we used to be. This is not an impossibility. We could start, for example, showing more tear-jerking oldies like Dixon of Dock Green! (I am not joking). People crave for the 'authorities' to take the lead and they crave for good behaviour which we are all naturally inclined to.

We should go back to the future. Start with the media, motivate the existing parents and encourage moral behaviour in schools. Parents should be given a reward of some sort by taking part in school activities. The kids are only reacting to what is happening in today's society where we let the real criminals rule the streets.
A new national anthem 4:19pm on 30 Jun 2008 I am still reeling with laughter about the Billy Connelly suggestion ...... I can't get The Archers tune out of my head. Nor for that matter the vision of the queen on horseback singing along to it!
