Run for your life 6:02pm on 18 Sep 2008 Ta2008-in what way are the british responsible?its you governments heinous policies of institutionalised racism and oppression that have led to the lack of opportunities and decent living conditions for the indigenous american indians,similar to the barbarism meted out to the aboriginal population in australia.Yes,the usa and australia were british colonies 200+years ago but the sole responsibility for the subsequent ill treatment of these minorities lies with contemporary american society,who have stolen and pillaged native american indian land and enslaved these people into a life of poverty and desperation.

im not asking the bbc to concentrate on the less pleasant sides to the usa but in the interests of balance it would be only right that disenfranchised sections of american society were covered and they are blatantly not,it is all safe middle of the road,middle america we are hearing from and that by its very nature is totally unrepresentative of the state your country is in today,
as with the ok corrall,it is merely an anglocentric version of events,and if you noticed jon uses wikipedia as a reference source to back up the legitimacy of events at the ok corrall!,wikipedia being a notoriously unreliable agency when seeking fact and impartial readings of events.
Tiptop,you show me one version of your history and i'll show you another perspective on the same event,a version not manufactured by the victor,(which is what you believe)and what is taught in your schools,but by the defeated and the oppressed on the wrong side of the tracks,THEN YOU TELL ME WHO IS TELLING THE TRUTH!
A political bloodbath 9:26pm on 16 Sep 2008 These blogs just are not particularly enlightening,its just stating the obvious and confirming prejudices regarding the standpoints of republicans and democrats,its a waste of time and money for the bbc to so frivolously squander british peoples money on a minority interest such as american politics.
As for the gunfight at the
"ok corral"being one of the "defining tales"of the american west,that is just palpably nonsense and anglo saxon american revisionist mythology,what about the persecution and ethnic cleansing of the native american indians?,which is another fundamental issue you have failed to raise amongst many others on your sojourn over there jon.it seems to me the bbc is failing in its remit to bring us accurate,impartial reporting particularly neglecting such important issues as racism,injustice,poverty which are hugely prevelent in the u.s.,
you have taken the safe route jon and its been documented many times before,you should have gone off the beaten track jon and shown us the hidden america ie;visited penitentiary's,reservations,deprived inner city ghettos,that would have been much more interesting and been a truer, more accurate portrayal of american society than you have shown us so far.
I have'nt learnt anything i didnt know already which is a real shame and a missed opportunity,british television is saturated with american imports portraying all aspects of the diversity in american life so i can no longer see the relevance of these poor mans alistair cook postcards.
Annie, get your gun 8:23pm on 15 Sep 2008 Its all very well interviewing gun toting middle class grandmothers jon but so far after travelling what?at least 2000 miles you have highlighted none of the third world poverty and homelessness out there.Fair and balanced reporting?Homelessness is a real problem in the usa jon and you havent even hinted at its existence,i wonder why?the sole and disturbing memory i have after my trip to the states 10 years ago was the amount of pan handlers roaming the streets and yet the bbc has chosen to ignore this terrible problem which is now beginning to envelope alot of ordinary people.The bbc would rather concentrate on the views of ill informed republicans who are convinced obama is a muslim and their belief that sarah palin is the second coming.

Easy riders 7:42pm on 14 Sep 2008 At what point did david brown stress his dislike for big government?are you working under the assumption that all republicans do not like a sprawling interfering bureaucracy in washington?what do they believe the bush regime has done in the last 8 years but interfere in a monstrous way,what with the patriot act and arbitrary powers to monitor peoples conversations,political affiliations etc,or do they prefer the hands off approach they so complacently demonstrated during the carnage in new orleans after hurricane katrina?and their profit driven attitude to universal health care,a stark contrast to their attitude to their corporate friends when they get in serious trouble ie; the freddie mac and fanny may bail outs!!
As stated earlier,this is a fruitless exercise which will garner no great insight into the rationale of ordinary american people or society in general,people are irrational and unpredictable the world over and in this era of mass communication and fixation with celebrity and show business even the likes of sarah palin,a complete unknown could become president of the most powerful country on earth,as evidenced by barbara hall who somewhat mystifyingly endorses her for all the reasons i have just pointed out.
There is no logic to any of the people you talk to jon,the usa is a country shot through with inconsistencies,hypocrisy and ignorance,but i suppose the one thing you have achieved is to highlight these facts,whether or not it is worth the money for a minority blog like this is very debatable,at least you are doing something positive jon unlike alot of your fellow citizens back here in the uk,how about reporting on the anti social and economic problems in britain jon?instead of worrying about a country on the other side of the world.
