Olympic evictions 1:01pm on 19 Jul 2008 Thanks James, you have done a good job in covering a very sensitive problem in modern China.

This problem is complex and requires dealing case by case with constant attention.

In some cases, the "owners" didn't own the property legally they defended for. In a courtyard house in Beijing, the tempetations to smuggle a small extension to the existing accomodation are high as it is hard for the government to detect and cheap in doing so. It creats two major problems:

1. The original courtyard house is being under constant strain and suffering avoidable deterioration. More often, they lost every aspect of architectural beauty.

2. It resulted in a very serious problem -overdensity. Many of these houses became slum of the city which presented many problems as hygiene, crime and fire fighting.

After visiting some of such communities, I don't think the government should do nothing about the it. It certainly needs some one off their hand from the property, especially the one who doesn't actually own the property.

In many cases, the government has an over reaction to the problem that they will clear a whole heck of community away to make way for some very rude and non-sense planning strategy, e.g. making a new shoping center etc. It presented two major problems as well:

1. There is not a very effective way to protest against the new planning decision of the city.

2. There is not a very effective way for the residents to stop the government from knocking out their homes. The government would possibly do everything they can to achieve the goals, sometimes like thugs.

I do have the pride as a Chinese, I do like some decision the government ever made, but sometimes, they are not always right.

This is obviously insane. It is making no sense to connect a city's air pollution measures to its country's diplomatic strategys. I simply don't get where is the connection about.

On the other hand, if you do believe there is any connection, to make such an accusing tone, you'd expect your government did all things perfectly right to China.

However, I must remind you there are two things rendering any Briton should be really cautions about the point they are making when talking about China:

1. Your goverment used to export opium to China, when blocked by Chinese government, resorting to war. You call this "free trade"?.

2. Your goverment burnt down the Chinese royal palace in Beijing, taking a great number of royal collection back. How do you like if some Chineses burnt down your Buckingham Palace?

I want to tell you, it is just ridicilous for someone that used to exploit China now talke about what China should do.

James knows the game, he report with the fact he masterted. You don't, you like to comment with the unhealthy imagination you have.
Testing pollution levels 8:12pm on 08 Jul 2008 As a 23-years Beijinger I can tell this report is not exaggerating anything more than reality.

The reason is that no meter is really necessary to tell Beijing has bitter enviroment. Just live there a month and count the good days with your fingers. Big possibility that one hand is enough for the job.

There seemed a culture to bash James on the negative report of China. But guys, China won't improve if people have no way to know what is happening.
