Scientists v Politicians: Round 3 10:33am on 29 Oct 2009 Two Words: The Netherlands.

I may be mistaken but I seem to remember a recent survey whereby Dutch kids were judged to be the happiest, most contented kids on the planet. Cannabis is de-criminalised in the Netherlands. It has not had a detrimental effect on the Dutch population.

Alcohol is a deadly, liver wasting, violence inducing class A drug that should be condemned.

The medical benefits of cannabis (marijuana) are now being recognised by the US government.

It's time that our Politicians started treating us like ADULTS and let us decide what is good or bad for OWN bodies and minds.
Could we save billions by legalising drugs? 7:32pm on 08 Apr 2009 What country has the lowest unemployment rate in the whole EU?

Here are some clues;

It is the country that has de-criminalised cannabis.
It is the country that has state sanctioned brothels.
It has a great football team.
It absolutely, positively emphasises CYCLING as the greatest form of transport.
It is multi lingual.
It abhors intolerance.
IT HAS THE LOWEST UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN EUROPE.

Answer:- Not the UK nanny state where responsible adults who want to chill and wind down after a hard day looking for a job can't enjoy a doobie or two without fear of persecution and imprisonment.

I'm always amazed by the fact that the football blogs (excepting King of Blogs Robert Peston) are the most illuminatory, emotional and best debated on the whole BBC.

Even the devastating impact of the credit crunch cannot detract footie fans from their passion.

A few aside it is heartening to acknowledge that footie fans are true gentlemen and gentlewomen.

As a Dundee United fan living in Helsinki I read BBC news and sport every day. I get so despondent with the news that I am sorely tempted to turn my back on the UK forever. New Labour, obsession with racism and political correctness stifling free speech, mp's expenses, knife crime, compensation culture etc etc etc. Then I read the football pages and particularly the blogs ( your's, Robbo's, hell, even Mihir Bose) and I am enthused with good feeling. I laugh out loud, get mad in a positive way and most importantly smile. Thank you very much.

Back to the topic. I don't know much about loan signings and their impact so a change of course here that has to be said. To all you English football fans out there. My favourite player of all time (he has been mentioned in this blog so it is not totally irrelevant) is, wait for it ....................................... the Lugmeister himself, Paul Sturrock.

But is it art? 6:28pm on 15 Jan 2009 Firstly I would like to thank the dictator KingGeorge2010 for expressing the view of his 60 million subjects of the UK. I don't know how he does it. He must be psychic or God to know how all these people regard Bulgarians. Secondly, I am really glad your time has been wasted. Fascism is deplorable in all it's forms.
But is it art? 5:52pm on 15 Jan 2009 As a Brit subjected to the totally unjustified pseudo-intelectual lauding of Damien Hirst, Tracy Emin, Turner Prize etc this piece of true art is as refreshing as any renaissance masterpiece.

It has real people debating it's merits and quality. Bulgarian toilets, spineless and subjugated Netherlands, swastikas, lego, Dracula, football and elephants. Every human expression is art, it's just that some people are better at it than others.

This Czech artist is a super nova in a universe being consumed by an artistic black hole perpetrating as artist as capitalist.

Come on ordinary people of Europe. Make a stand. Recognise brilliance. Demand a viewing.

Art talks, bad art walks to the bank to deposit it's millions.

What factories? what manufacturing?

Uk plc is just one big call centre. Manufacturing was last seen in the UK co-existing with bears and wolves. It died along with Evelyn Waugh, the Railway Children and Postman Pat.

Germany, the world's largest exporter and one of the largest manufacturers is now officially in recession. What chance does this abused island have in the face of such an economic onslaught. Nil.

As a regular reader of Robert's blog since the NR fiasco and I mean regular (more than a year and counting). I have checked and read Robert's postings on an almost daily basis since then but I only discovered 3 days ago that he is Robert Peston and not Robert Preston. Whenever my brain registered Robert Peston it assumed it was a typo. Why is this? The surname Peston will not be accepted by my asscimilating faculties. I am amazed. Does this enhance the cliche that fact is a lot stranger than fiction? I hope someone can enlighten me on this conundrum.

I don't know if you are aware but Paul Sturrock is the best football player I have ever had the good fortune to witness. PS is a clone of Kenny Dalglish. They both had huge arses. Both could turn like Bruce Lee on speed. Luggy was a real once in a lifetime entertaining genius. Check his Dundee United record. My best football memories comprise PS, Davie Narey, Paul Hegarty, Ralph Milne, Eammon Bannon et al. When my kids go on about Christiano Ronaldo I always tell them the best player ever was Paul Sturrock (Luggy).
Why our banks are vulnerable 09:50am on 30 Sep 2008 Peter Mandelson, Gordon Brown, Robert Preston et al. It makes my blood boil that these stalwarts of Europe and the Uk have the temerity to criticise the US political system for voting down the Paulson bail out package. What right do they have for attacking the US taxpayer and expecting them to fund the rescue of the UK financial system. Things are a lot tougher in the US than the UK right now and yet we stand here moaning and whining, which is typical of a nation that has lost it's sense of ownership. I have the impression that these great British Isles have really become the 51st state. Ordinary US taxpayers hate the idea of subsidising Wall Street vultures while at the same time being kicked out of their homes. It's time we stood up, accepted responsibility, dig in, rein back and batton the hatches. We will survive this with frugality, appreciation of life versus consumerism and good old fashioned improvisation. We are all to blame for this mess and for us as British citizens and Europeans to expect the American taxpayer to bail us out is maddening in the extreme. Well done Congress. If only our politicians would listen to the people before throwing our hard earned taxes at incompetent institutions and instead plough the money where we the taxpayer want it sown. Pathetic.
