Writers Academy 8 9:47pm on 04 Mar 2009 I applaud the idea of the Writers' Academy, but hope it's not the only way in to write for TV because that would mean you have a hell of a long queue out there...
Can protests make a difference? 1:45pm on 05 Feb 2009 One rule for one, and rule for another. Jonathan Ross can make obscene calls on air to millions of people and only gets a slapped wrist, but Carol T gets the sack over a childish comment - because I think we're all agreed that nothing racist was meant. Thought police, political snobbery, political correctness gone mad, pettymindedness - that about sums up the hypocritical attitudes operating at the BBC

Nevertheless, the casting feels terribly contrived and lacking conviction. As to certain groups being more vulnerable, the decline in our immune system really kicks in over the age of 60 and, in any event, some of the survivors were naturally immune and didn't contract the disease at all. Nit picking aside, must agree in the lack of logic in the writing and the sheer volume of coincidences...

So much material, such a great backdrop and so little imagination. I was simply really really looking forward to this... No more said...
It's the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine...) 10:02pm on 27 Nov 2008 In this politically correct and, sadly, ageist version of the original, I found myself getting mildly excited when two of the intrepid band discovered a poor old geezer trying to defend what was left of his shop. At last, thought I, someone over forty (eighty would be nearer the mark actually), but no sooner had he opened his mouth when he was knocked on the head.

I had to laugh...
Survivors 3:59pm on 24 Nov 2008 Terry Nation created Survivors. This is a copy of it.

Yes, Matthew Graham wrote The Last Train and yes he also co-created Bonekickers, and also co-created Life on Mars and also wrote for the fabulous This Life.

Which just goes to prove that no matter how good we may be some of the time, the rest of the time we're not quite as good as we think we are ...

But this is actually not a direct criticism of Mr Graham. I assume a great many other people were involved with this poor resurrection of what was a truly great series.
Survivors 11:18am on 24 Nov 2008 Survivors - not one survivor over forty. It's just not credible that out of a population of some sixty million all of the survivors will be attractive and on average 30. Even the Minister looked like she was barely out of uni. And out of our little band of brothers we are very well represented by minority groups, including the psychopathic group... My heart sank.
And all meeting up on the same spot on the same stretch of motorway...?
Apocalyptic series are truly fascinating and should be treated with respect. Try The Last Train - 6 episodes of excellent well written and characterised drama (ITV 1999), or, indeed, the original Survivors...
This version felt a bit like Bonekickers - too little thought and too much of the bl**ding obvious...
Give up your secrets... 10:36am on 25 Sep 2008 I've already said that I thought this sad attempt at something relatively serious was 'rather silly'. But also have to agree with 'Kroggy' and 'Taughran' more detailed responses - particularly Kroggy's comment which doubles for me, too:

"As someone who is trying to break into TVwriting, what is even more galling is that if I had sent that to the BBC writersroom as an example of my writing I suspect the reader wouldn't have even got as far as page ten. "

And they probably would have had a good laugh at the same time.

But how much did this ill-thought-through, and probably very expensive series actually cost? Don't even go there...

"FBCs U's and E's" by Abi Bown. 3:31pm on 15 Aug 2008 Yes, but Mark (aka Robert Powell) was given a coke habit and somehow that was okay, but it was so surreal, almost laughable and now we never hear about it. I, too, wondered 'Why don't they get the makers of the trailers to produce the episodes? We'd watch it then...' Having such a 'cool' trailer and not making the actual show 'cool' is a bit like putting the cart before the horse... And for heaven's sake, we can have booze, drugs, sex, crime, burying people alive in EastEnders and somehow that's okay? By the way, despite having irregular periods (is it okay to say this on this site... oh er matron), I still find it incredible Daisha didn't know she was preggers. And wasn't this a good opportunity for someone, anyone, to mention the word CONTRACEPTION? Or rather the lack of it?
