Well exactly.. As far as I can gather China is actually more interested in getting manufacturing companies to move there and in some areas such a rare earth metals for electric motors and batteries will actually limit their export to ensure companies have to move there to get access to those metals.

Hence - in part - my comment about Brown having lost the plot.

"In our new growth strategy, I want not hundreds but thousands of of Chinese companies in Britain, but also British companies in China."

This man has really lost the plot.

Sad then that we don't make any of the broadband hardware although our EU colleagues in France do... Come to think of it they French are also going to be building our new nuclear power stations because Gordy flogged the only reactor builder we owned to the Japanese about six months before declaring his build nuke policy....

'Just say no' 8:23pm on 21 Nov 2009 According to the Torygraph the deal Brown did to ensure Baroness Ashton got the EU foreign whatever job was that Michel Barnier, a centre-right French politician will get the job as internal market commissioner overseeing financial regulation.

Mr Barnier, a former commissioner, is well known as defender of French protectionism and is hostile to the “Anglo-Saxon” free market model of capitalism. So so far so good....

The prospect has apparently alarmed the City of London, where many banks fear the imposition of new EU regulations on the financial services sector.

But the best comment of all came from William Hague, the shadow foreign secretary, who said Mr Barnier was a “serious concern” and a threat to “the economic issues that affect Britain the most”. He previously called for Britain to pursue one of three major economic post and accused the government of pursuing the “wrong priority”.

“Our French partners have a different view on market issues that touch on Britain’s vital economic interests,” he said. “Now that Britain will no longer have an EU Commissioner with a major economic brief it will be vital that the British Government, whichever party is in power, engages closely with the Commission to ensure that it keeps to a pro-growth agenda.”

So what Hague is saying here is that the interests of the City of London are paramount and this tends to blow a big hole through the Tory claims to want to rebalance the economy and increase manufacturing.

To my mind this makes the idea of the SNP holding the balance of power at Westminster even more important.

Clyde-built recovery 12:00pm on 21 Nov 2009 The lack of start-ups and the appalling numbers on manufacturing tells me a number of things.

Firstly, the financial services sector in Scotland is mainly concerned with low value adding operations such as call centres and paper pushing not in providing the funding for the creation of new or early stage igh value adding businesses.

Therefore whilst it provides jobs it is also a liability in that those jobs are not leading to other more beneficial activities.

Secondly, this also tells me that Scottish Enterprise is simply not achieving what it should be achieving and although that's not a new story this emphasises the problem.
