Wednesday 9 September 2009 11:34pm on 09 Sep 2009 The police are asking people to "volunteer" their DNA. If you refuse to "volunteer", you become as suspect in a serious crime and are investigated. That does not sound very voluntary to me.
The BBC licence free? 7:50pm on 26 Nov 2008 Although it is independent, "state funded" broadcasters around the world are very important.

Aside from anything, it keeps everyone else honest. Look at Fox News in the US, or the state of our newspapers. Sky News would be exactly like that if the BBC didn't counterbalance it, because there would be nothing to contrast it with.

Of course we are not talking about getting rid of the BBC, but not having it freely and universally available and free from commercial pressures would undoubtedly change it for the worse.

I don't even watch that much TV, and I hate the BBC's highest paid entertainer, but when I do watch TV it's almost always the BBC. No doubt it's expensive but worth it I think.

In response to 167, I think HYS if infested with Daily Mail reading foaming-at-the-mouth types, who don't represent the majority (or at least I really hope not). In fact, I'd say Nick Robinson is actually giving the current main news bulletins a right-wing slant.
Is the BBC to blame for attacks on Poles? 2:24pm on 04 Jun 2008 It's not the BBCs fault at all. The decision to attack someone is made in the attackers mind, where they have chosen their influences and interpretations.

If you can be held responsible for some idiot misinterpreting your words then free speech is dead.
Did Mary Whitehouse have a point? 1:47pm on 28 May 2008 I think the problem is less about what the media does, and more about how people react to it. It seems that a lot of people are woefully inept at interpreting what they see and hear, determining fantasy from reality and truth from extreme bias/lies.

The answer is education, not censorship.
Are green taxes dead? 1:20pm on 27 May 2008 The solution to environmental problems is going to be technical rather than taxation. Develop more efficient cars and and slowly increase limits on the amount of allowable pollution from new ones. Do the same for new houses, new factories, industrial processes, product packaging etc.

Green taxation just hits those who can least afford it hardest, and reduces quality of life for most of us.
