Return of the soapbox 11:56am on 21 Jul 2009 And your point is? David Cameron is not afraid of meeting the people - he has been going around the country for ages holding open meetings.

It is a good thing that Cameron wants to stick to his pledges. But it has nothing to do with the point that Gordon Brown takes the British people for fools. Brown comes out with palpable nonsense time after time. That is quite different from reneging on his promises - e.g. to hvae a referendum on the EU Constitution (now the Lisbon Treaty) and not to increase the top rate of income tax.
Relieved and nervous 5:08pm on 05 Jun 2009 The BBC's projected share of the vote for the Conservatives is plainly wrong. They are taking masses of seats off Labour and the LibDems, but the BBC has them down 6% as against Labour down 1% and the LibDems up a lot.
This is a disaster for Labour and a disaster for the country because we are stuck with Brown as Prime Minister.
But the Conservatives have triumphed in the local elections and have a lame duck Prime Minister as their opponent in the general election which must take place within a year.

It's about time you stopped buttering up Brown and his cronies. A change is going to come, whetehr this year or next.

Brown is finished, washed up, out of ideas, out of support, rumbled, discredited, bankrupt morally, bankrupt intellectually and - in terms of government finances - literally bankrupt, holed below the waterline, revealed by the McBride episode as a vicious smearer, out of touch, out of ideas, out to lunch, deluding only himself, scorned by the public, pathetic, useless, lacking any moral compass, lacking any understanding of how others live, feel or see him, bunker-bound, blinkered and a disasater for the country. It would be tragic were he a nicer man.

Of course he's scared of the voters. He knows what will happen. He knew in October 2007. He knows now. He will cling on, but one day we will have our say and he will consigned to the dustbin of history. The worst prime minister for at least 100 years.

Sir Patrick Cormack got it right when he asked the speaker to consider his position and referred to the debate on Norway in 1940 when Neville Chamberlain fell. Martin is relying on his "friends" just as Chamberlain did. Lloyd George told Chamberlain where to get off and Martin should do the same:

The nation is prepared for every sacrifice as long as it has leadership, so long as the government show clearly what they are aiming at, and so long as the nation is confident that those who are leading it are doing their best. Hannan's speech was news too. And you missed it. So did all your colleagues. On his blog Nick Robinson managed to mention the approving comments of the leader of the Socialist group, but not those of Mr Hannan.

How many BBC journalists were there on the day? How could they all miss what was - to anyone who has seen the speech - NEWS? The answer, I fear, may well be that their heads were so far up the Prime Minister's fundament that they could not hear Mr Hannan.

Too right. It is a statement utterly devoid of meaning. I had no need for your help, Nick, in understanding what Mr Hannan said so well on Tuesday so I quite understand that you don't feel any need to mention it. Whereas we need your help to understand what the inanely grinning idiot at 2.54 in the You Tube video means when he gibbers on about saving the world.

Then again, you might be missing a big story with Mr Hannan while you jet around with Mr Brown and his cronies.
Perils of political promises 10:40am on 23 Mar 2009 The problem for the Tories is that the present government shows no sign of doing the decent thing and calling a general election now. They are going to cling on until the last possible minute. And, while they remain in power, they are mucking up the nation's finances. Big time. Because the Tories can reasonably expect to win, they - unlike Brown and Darling - have to think about how to clear up the mess which is being created. The big story is not the Tories' reaction, but the antics of the goverment which is living on the never-never.

It wasn't a "Balls up" 1:35pm on 10 Feb 2009 "Gordon Brown has consistently been the slowest to spell it out, the most aware of the dangers of undermining confidence and the quickest to criticise the Tories for "talking Britain down"."

Come off it? He has been saying that the present crisis is unprecedented and serious etc. And his puppet chancellor said it was the worst for donkey's years last summer.

It would be fair to say, however, that the suggestion in the pre-budget report last November that the economy would start to grow again in the third quarter of this year was preposterous.
