Irish PM: 'No' would kill Lisbon 09:36am on 10 Jun 2008 Ireland, notably one of the Member States which have benefitted most from EC/EU membership, should in any event vote 'yes'. They should do so for several reasons:

1. The vote is not on whether the Irish approve of their EU membership or not, it is not about voting out of the organisation (which certainly is NOT an empire!) but on a treaty that basically simplifies its administration and makes it more efficient which can only be in the mutual interest of all Europeans.

2. One of the elements of Lisbon is that it is helping - and not hindering - democratization of the Union and strengthening the rights of individuals, e.g. by cross-refering to the EU Charter of Human Rights, making it legally binding.

3. Economic integration is already way further developed than is known to the average European, so that in fact much of Europe's economic and trade policy is made in Europe, not in, say, Paris or Dublin. Is it not better then to facilitate unity rather than to maintain an administrative monster which seriously threatens Europes position in the world economy?
