Will Obama be cool or warm? 9:33pm on 07 Oct 2008 I'm rather surprised that you would suggest Obama's performance tonight - warm or cool - would change anything.

I think expectations of him are about as low tonight as they were of Sarah Palin last week. He just needs to not fall over and give forthright responses to all the fearful questions about the economy. McCain is the only man who can alter anything tonight - he can convince people that he's capable or leading during a crisis. Or he could have a go at Obama for hanging out with terrorists. Whichever he chooses.

I haven't heard this mentioned, maybe I missed it: The American public love the presidential debates. They'd be miffed at McCain for denying them their reality TV show.

I remember being over here in 2004, thirty people crowded around a TV shouting at everything Bush said (it was California). It's a huge event in the election and an immensely enjoyable one for a public starved of the kind of political theater that British people get every Wednesday.

It's Tim Kaine, all the way. Just look at the 30 minute video posted on Barack's YouTube site today.

And John McCain would be crazy to pick anyone other than Romney. He has the tougher choice. Ridge is too close to Bush. He's somehow evaded the link so far, but he needs someone to set him apart. Romney could be his ace in the hole.
Into the evangelical bear pit 11:51pm on 18 Aug 2008 I agree in part with Candace9839 and Gary_A_Hill, they were hardly "dragged" into this. It was a perfect opportunity for both men, who have moderate religious views, to frame their policies in a Christian perspective and introduce themselves apart from those policies.

But, Cyril_Croydon, I wouldn't write off Tim Kaine. He would certainly be Obama's choice if he relies on gut instinct.

Political wives 07:22am on 13 Aug 2008 This story belongs where it began - supermarket tabloids. It's celebrity gossip.

The political story is that he lied to his staff. They have every right to feel hurt and betrayed by these shenanigans. I am baffled by the argument, hinted at above, that knowledge of this affair should have hindered his decision to seek office. And actually, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he recovers from this and returns to work for the Obama administration (2nd term, of course).

The Clinton whinge is equally baffling. Edwards voters placed Obama overwhelmingly as their second choice.

By the way Justin, has anyone used the word "cad" in published journalism since 1918? While you're at it - bring back the word 'cove'. I like that one.
Why Clinton lost 07:53am on 08 Jun 2008 Pretty facile comments for you, Justin. Surely organizing, or lack thereof, was her biggest foe. And not being Bill Clinton's wife, so much as Bill Clinton himself. The things he said were criticized far more often than the things she said.
How about another thing that not many people are talking about - starting the campaign too early. A book was published in 2005 titled - Hillary vs. Condi: the 2008 election (or something like that). We all knew she'd run. We weren't so aware of Barack's plans. Will future campaigns try to hold back the tide of speculation as to a candidate's running? I think the same issue is going to hurt John McCain too. Newness is a brand new political weapon.
