Owen worth Man Utd gamble 08:58am on 06 Jul 2009 whether or not Owen is still up for it is actually irrelevant. The bottom line is that he is a "fox in the box" type player. Man United have not played with a fox in the box since Van Nistlerooy. This is a significant problem. If you don't believe me consider this:

United with Ruud: 1 Title in 5 years

United since Van Nistlerooy: 3 Titles in 3 years

I know that the emergence of Ronaldo (and also to carrick and vidic etc) was a huge factor in their recent success, but the increased promenence of Ronaldo was only possible due to Ruud leaving.

Fergie now has gone back to a system he himself deemed not good enough 3 years ago....and is doing it with a player who (unlike RvN) is over the hill.

Bitter recriminations at the Bridge 2:31pm on 08 May 2009 All this rambling about Barca only having one shot on target whilst dismissing the possession stats stinks of selective use of facts. Either dismiss both or consider both fairly. You have to conclude that in the final 3rd, barca still have a lot to learn against the top teams (and to shoot more!) whilst their is no getting away from the fact that for all of chelsea's dangerous counter attacks, their ball retention was awful and it would have helped for them to keep the ball for longer.

Also does anyone else get the impression that the outrage expressed by chelsea players and fans alike is that they so often (like the rest of the sky 4) get favourable treatment from refs? As a supporter of a non-big 4 prem team if the ref put in that performance in favour of chelsea in a match against us, i know for a fact that in the morning there would be no fuss from the media (and several FA charges against our players if they complained-In fact look up the Chelsea-Sunderland match earlier this season, Youll get where im coming from. Oh and man uniteds 1st goal against spurs the other week anyone?).
Bitter recriminations at the Bridge 8:11pm on 07 May 2009 The general consensus seems to be that Hiddink got his tactics spot on and that it was only a real fluke that Barca scored at all. There is a problem with this though. Chasing the ball when not in possession does tire out a team. Chelsea looked shattered for the last 10 minutes and this eventually showed in the amount of time the barca players had on the edge of the chelsea box (eventually cumulating in the space Iniesta had). Hiddink should have known this and put on Ivanovic (who looks good) to freshen up the defence.

As well as this, when abidal was (unfairly) sent off, Hiddink didn't change it (apart from Drogba's injury which was forced)to put barca under pressure. For the last 25 minutes Barca's defence consisted of Dani Alves who was playing rubbish and was on a yellow, Gerard Pique who was deemed unfit to warm Man United's bench and Yaya Toure who for all his attributes, is a central midfielder. Why didn't Chelsea attack this substandard defence? One more thing Gus, i'm sure the refereeing in World Cup 2002 for South Korea's matches was a shade worse.....

Phil, the debating about the referee also detracts barca's good performance. Consider the average age of that team, their incredible ability to keep the ball under pressure from accomplished players and their guts and determination (qualities we are meant to admire in this country) to keep going and play to the whistle. These haven't been mentioned or acknowledged today by the mainstream press (including you).

Congradulations Barca. You deserve it.

for the last 25 mins barca's defence consisted of dani alves who was having a very poor night and was booked so he had to be careful, gerard pique who wasnt good enough to get on Man United's bench, yaya toure who is a young, inexperienced central midfielder and sylvenio who was deemed not good enough by arsenal years ago and was only playing because marquez was injured. At that point chelsea should have attacked and gone for the jugular.

Ministerial veto 5:43pm on 24 Feb 2009 The Tories are only agreeing to this so that when their government comes to power (in a year's time), they can hold Labour to agreeing not to investigate any of their potential malpractices. Palin disaster, Powell endorsement 6:57pm on 20 Oct 2008 To be honest Justin, I think that the Obama campaign looked at the last 2 elections and devised a way to win without both Florida and Ohio. Obama looks on course to win the Kerry states (yes losing Pennsylvania would be a problem but McCain's numbers in that state aren't looking good at all with defecits or high single digits at least).

Add to this New Mexico and Iowa which were set up by strong primary campaigns and he is 6 electroal votes away.

Of the remaining swing states (not including Florida and Ohio, we'll assume he loses both) he is marginally ahead in Colorado, Nevada, Virginia and Missouri with it being too close to call in North Carolina. Even a win in Nevada only would put im on 269 which would be as good as a win considering the Dems control of the House.

I think even now that the Obama team don't expect to win either FL or OH. In the last week if they are both still toss ups then as McCain piles resourses into both, Obama can pick off Virginia or Colorado or Missouri.
Tightening polls 10:23am on 17 Oct 2008 To be honest it's not like the polls have gotten closer, it's just Obama hasn't steamrollered to 15+points ahead and this shows that he has lost momentum and found his ceiling (rather than McCain getting a bounce)
