Obama's improved performance 5:52pm on 04 May 2009 Obama's foreign policy (to stay on topic) has encouraged me to return to the US to live. Not New Jersey this time (despite Short Hills and Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge) but California (despite a scary Miss C.).
Am I going to meet many like MAII...? For a whole year he's made me gasp at his outrageous and dated views of Britain and Europe.
But can anyone - honestly - give me a percentage of how many Americans think like him? I speak with an English accent and when I was there 5 years ago everyone could not have been more pleasant. I never got abuse for being British (just the opposite actually).
Anyone like to hazard a figure on people with his viewpoint - and who may be simiarly vocal?

And you don't suspend a campaign for a meeting... you leave it in the hands of your vice-presidential candidate... that's what she's there for. Oh dear... maybe not!

I've been reading your posts for some while now and my reactions have gone from mild amusement to incredulity. So, you hate European cooking, European plumbing, in fact all Europeans - no matter what their nationality. No doubt the mountains in Europe are not very good either.
Now that's your right... but please do yourself a favour... see the irony in taking the profile name of a Roman Emperor (who was born in Spain - that'll be in Europe), who appreciated the Greek (that'll be in Europe then) philosophers and ruled lands from Britain (uuhhh...in Europe) to modern Turkey (just a wee bit in europe but the rest is in Moslem (gulp) Asia (gulp, gulp).
As others have implied you could have taken the name of his worthless son Commodus. But he'd still be European.
Seriously though.. just remember that not all Europeans (British included) by any stretch of the imaginateion hate the USA. In fact, from my experience, it's just the opposite. Some of us are a bit disquieted about current policies. I, for one, will still be weeping for your fellow citizens in the event of another 9/11. Americans are still human - even if you think Europeans not. You do your country no favours. And you are no Roman emperor.... well maybe Caligula.
Disappointment? 7:08pm on 05 Sep 2008 I can't get the links to work smartly so can I just say, for some Friday night laughs, check out The Daily Show website and check out their "takes" on the convention: "Sarah Palin Vet This" should make you hoot, and despite the seemingly prurient title "Bristol Palin's Choice" puts some pro-lifers on the spot. You'll squirm...
I was reading somewhere that John Stewart is becoming a main source of news for some youngsters... well, if it keeps us all interested...!

You say Mike Hukabee's speech was a "gem".

This bit wasn't very gem-like:
"Barack Obama's excellent adventure to Europe...(LAUGHTER)... took his campaign for change to hundreds of thousands of people who don't even vote or pay taxes here. But let me hasten to say that it's not what he took there that concerns me. It's what he brought back: European ideas that give the government the chance to grab even more of our liberty and destroy our hard-earned livelihood."

He's making a cheap shot: "Americans good, Europeans bad". Presumably that goes down well with Republican conference-goers. As a citizen of a country who stood and still stands "shoulder to shoulder" with the USA after 9/11 and is still losing soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan his comments are at best insensitive, at worst dishonourable.

Palin's punches 10:00am on 04 Sep 2008 THe discussion about mothers juggling work and children isn't one we should be having in the 21st century. I'm a stay-at-home dad looking after my three under-fives, my wife works full time in her choosen career. No problem. She even chose to pump milk at work so we could keep feeding out tots mummy's milk. This should be a non-issue. However, I do understand that with a special-needs child other factors come into play. As VP though she'd get no end of assistant carers though and be financially-secure... good reason to go with the offer. choose the VP. Not to mention the disctinction of first female VP and probable President.
