As your default, view all your emails in text-only mode. The scams will be much more obvious; and you can then view any messages that have other content when you know they are safe. And what does HTML add to emails anyway? It is a text medium.

Cleaning up bankers' mess 5:44pm on 30 Apr 2009 Well, I can think of four households where a very downbeat view of the banking system prevailed for at least a year before the crunch started.

Mostly this was based on the old saw "if something looks to good to be true..."

The bankers and the politicians were in total denial (with honourable exceptions as usual, but also as usual, far too few of them) and the Regulators were frightened to act because they had no visible means of support, but there were plenty of commentators telling it like it was.

There were several members of the fourth estate and a few politicians at the front of this truth-telling, but as far as I can recall, no bankers...

I'll bet the guilty majority will ensure that those in the white hats here will be the ones going unrewarded and even being pictured as the source of the problem, along the lines of "If they hadn't asked about the Emperor's new clothes everything would still be all right."

Is there a due process?
Is it followed?
Are the adults aware that the process is coming to and end and that they and their families will be will be 'detained'?
Are the adults aware of what 'being detained' entails and might entail?
Are the adults given the opportunity to report voluntarily for 'detention'?

Fred is damaged goods, Sir Tom is damaged goods (the "resignation" fronm the BP board looks like a ship deserting a sinking rat, and I reckon the McKillop 'affair' will take Sutherland down in the end as well). Sir Phil is bidding fair to be the next casualty.

And in my book the suits are right.

Yes, these first-movers have some influence; for instance there are a group of churnalists and teenage scribblers hanging on their every word.

But in reality they are a tiny minority, and their influence over the buying patterns of the millions of ordinary subscribers is sensibly nil.

Firstly because they "made the bed and now they should lie in it".

Secondly, because there is far too much HBOS influence below board level; someone is needed who can keep the lid on that. LBG may be holed below the waterline, but is still afloat and (probably) can be salvaged.

Without LTSB riding to the rescue, HBOS would not just be sunk but so deep in the silt that those wishing to pick over the wreck would not even be able to find it.

And I have no problem with Daniells and Blank getting seriously large bonuses if they deliver seriously large results; but they get b-all if they don't.

It may be closing the stable door, but future payments have got to be self-funding
- and not paid for at least three years after the qualifying period to ensure that the numbers on which the bonuses are based are not ficticious.
