O'Driscoll and co still inspire hope 6:43pm on 27 Feb 2009 As an Irishman, I do worry when we get carried away with ourselves and start taking victories for granted. We were all set for a decent run at the Grand Slam in 2001, but dropped the ball in Murrayfield and there were our dreams gone again.

You could have been forgiven for thinking a few years ago that the gap between the larger nations, England and France, could not be bridged by the Celtic nations in these professional times - but Wales have actually shown us all that it is possible to be that good.

One Grand Slam could have been called a flash in the pan, but their victory last year proved that you can have the guts and the ability, if not the population. I still believe they are the team to beat, but I hope Declan Kidney and co. share my outlook at reserving looking to this game, stricly after the England and Scotland matches.

But yeah, a fine article Mr Dirs. I hope you don't mind me being pedantic and pointing out that it is Tomas (or even Tomás, I think) O'Leary, and not Thomas.

The best transfer of the summer 9:32pm on 04 Aug 2008 I don't understand the people who are sticking the boot into Paul for writing this. If it was as comprehensive as some of you seem to want, it'd run to tens of thousands of words.

Anyway, back to the football:

I'm shaking with the anticipation of the new season. As a Forest fan, being out of League One is such a relief. I'm of the opinion that a season in midtable obscurity will do us nicely.

The younger players will get older and gain more experience, we'll establish ourselves back in the second tier again and hopefully make more signings, before making a run at the playoffs in 09/10.

From what I've seen of us, Guy Moussi looks like a real dark horse for signing of the season.

I fully expect the names of Lewis McGugan, Garath McCleary and Kelvin Wilson to feature to become household names in any home with a particular penchant for Championship football.

Of the competition, I fancy Reading to win the league. They have kept most of their players, who were the unfortunate victims of Fulham's fairytale. Birmingham, too, will go strongly.

Derby are the unknown quantity in the league. Purchasing an entire new side could either go really well, or hopefully absolutely appallingly. Morale could be a big problem and if Jewell doesn't win in his first few games then questions will be asked about his management.

I reckon Reading to win the league, Birmingham second and Ipswich up via the play-offs.

Relegated teams to include Blackpool, Barnsley and Preston.

Pietersen fails to complete rescue operation 11:31pm on 01 Aug 2008 I posted on here the other day saying that despite his terrific character, Collingwood should be dropped as a test cricketer.

I was quite clearly wrong.

Frail batting costs England again 7:01pm on 30 Jul 2008 I'm not really sure where England go from here.

It is hard to see South Africa not taking a substantial lead into the next set of innings, given that their batting line up is not nearly as likely to collapse at short notice.

Come Sunday, but probably before then, the series will be gone and England will have to pick up the pieces.

Collingwood is the obvious man to lose out. And it is a real shame, as he is no doubt a nice lad and now faces the prospect of not playing international cricket until his ban expires in the ODIs. In that time, unless he makes some good knocks for Durham, if KP produces the goods then there could be the argument to let him keep the armband, should Colly not be able to force his way back into the team. That, however, is very unlikely.

Shah is the man to come in. He's never really done anything wrong at international level, as much as anything, he just hasn't been able to force his way into what used to be a very congested England upper middle order. Now it's bottlenecked on who can get out of the team first.

Vaughan is a class player. How he has found himself in such a muddle is beyond me. England can't lose him. First problem: a complete lack of continuity in taking your captains in both forms of the game out of the side. Secondly, who captains?

The Sky boys touched on it. There are no obvious candidates. Strauss is just about back in the fold, Flintoff too injury prone, Collingwood dropped and I wouldn't want to weigh down KP it just yet.

Cook is the only man I'd trust with the job, but just not yet. And that, if nothing else, is why Vaughan must stay.

The power of One 5:40pm on 01 Jul 2008 Thanks for the insight, Roger.

I must admit I was a bit frustrated at changing channels on a regular basis, but I can see now it is to a large degree, unavoidable.

However, there was one incident yesterday which really annoyed me. The Ancic v Verdasco match was at its climax, Ancic having come from two sets down to be 6-6 in the final set. The winner plays Federer. I settled in for some great sporting theatre.

Only to be interrupted by Sue Barker telling me that we would be leaving the match to see the start of some other match. What could possibly be more exciting than Ancic v Verdasco at that point in the day?

Fortunately I have digital so I quickly switched back to the exciting finale, but if I didn't have interactive services I'd be getting on my soapbox and writing into Points of View.

That'd show you.
