Divisive alarms 6:07pm on 17 Nov 2008 There was such an explosion of speculation in the media on the possibility of Hillary for the Secretary of State position, I can't remember how it came about.

I think Hillary would be better as Attorney General than Sec'y of State.
An elusive surge 6:37pm on 04 Nov 2008 I went to vote at 7:30AM today. Two precincts vote in the same community center in my part of Davis, California (a small, affluent, majority-Democrat, college town), and there was an interesting contrast.

One precinct consists of upper-middle-class homeowners...at 7:30AM there were 50-60 people in line waiting to vote.

The other precinct consists of apartments rented by university grads/undergrads and single professionals...and there was no line, no waiting to vote.

...maybe the students voted early, or will vote after they roll out of bed at noon.
Bad losers and bad finishers 5:11pm on 30 Oct 2008 So very, very tired of the ninnies wailing about how the sky will fall and the multiple ways the nation will be destroyed if an opposing candidate wins the election. This isn't a banana republic we're living in, and we're not electing an omnipotent emperor...it's the USA and a 4- to 8-year president.

I was a Hillary supporter. I didn't like the way she was treated in the press and by the Obama campaign, but I've moved on. If the candidate herself can move on, my goodness, why can't everyone else?
Tightening polls 6:57pm on 17 Oct 2008 I'm a cynical Democrat who hasn't forgotten 2000 and 2004, and like everyone else out there, been repeatedly surprised by this campaign.

Sure, Barack is up in the polls...but I won't be able to breathe easily until I hear him say "So help me God" on the steps of the Capitol, next January.

The world won't end if Mac wins...I thank goodness Giuliani or Romney aren't the Republican nominees.

I do worry about Palin...she could be a repeat of George W. if she ever had to sit in the big chair...easily manipulated by powerful insiders. Hopefully McCain picks some wise, moderate people for his cabinet.
Getting angry 11:20pm on 10 Oct 2008 If he were the pre-presidential candidate McCain, he would do something to quell that sort of behavior at his rallies and in his own campaign. Then again, considering how much the Rush Limbaughs of the world do to fan the flames of anger and intolerance every day, it probably wouldn't do much good.
How McCain wins 11:59pm on 09 Oct 2008 To quote an oft used B-movie line, "It sounds crazy enough to work." It's the kind of hackneyed drama that many journalists reach for to find easy story hooks. Present company excepted. ;)

After reading the LAT article, I'll bet the McCain strategy will be to present Palin as more "hockey mom" than "pit bull." That's the Palin her followers love...they want to see "Mr(s). Smith Goes to Washington" in the debate, and I bet that's what the McCain camp is going to try to deliver.

I don't envy Joe Biden...he's walking into a minefield. I can't imagine what their strategy is going to be..."Just keep talking and don't look her in the eyes, okay Joey"?
The First US Presidential Debate - Live 06:19am on 27 Sep 2008 I have to agree with your conclusion...we probably won't be seeing many sound-bites from the debate appearing in the candidates' attack ads. I think the fact that the hype surrounding the debate has been so intense for the last two weeks, made it even more of a let-down. I don't hold out much hope for improvement with the Biden-Palin debate (though we might get a few giggles out of it, at least).
Hagel questions Palin's experience 5:31pm on 18 Sep 2008 I think I worry most about her susceptibility to the Cheneys and the Roves in government, her ability to stand up to that crowd. We're not talking about an "old boy network" in some backwater state where moxie might carry you for a few rounds in a fight.

John McCain, the "Original Maverick" and 26-year veteran senator, has done a 180-degree turn for men like this in the last year or two and dance to their tune; how will a political neophyte from Alaska do against them if she unexpectedly becomes president? I think she'd be more of a pushover than Bush has been.
Veep predictions 6:53pm on 20 Aug 2008 Neither McCain nor Obama are cut-out for going negative. When they try to do it, you can see their hearts just aren't in it.

I'm going to set aside all the position-stance and carry-a-state arguments for a moment and suggest that both candidates are going to gravitate toward someone who can fit the traditional "attack dog" role that VPs usually play. They're going to want a VP who is willing and able to punch below the belt for them.

In Obama's case, Joe Biden fits that role perfectly. He can take a bite out of someone in a debate and his tone and manner of speaking can sound angry or intimidating when he needs it to be.

For McCain, I think Romney is the more likely choice than Ridge. Ridge can be pretty scrappy, sure, but I think Romney is more intimidating and can talk a mean streak. And with the McCain camp dropping all these rumors that they're considering a pro-choice VP, Romney is going to look pretty good to conservatives, despite their previous doubts from his days as the Massachusetts governor.
