Can O2 cope with smartphone traffic? 7:16pm on 07 Jul 2009 I would like to see good smart phones spread around the networks not just O2. Hopefully smart phones will become the standard for all users soon to get over the integration issues of different handsets and operators
The big question though - given the Digital Britain report - is that for now mobile is a small peak to the internet iceberg but that situation will soon be inverted according to many forecasts. It doesnt seem we are even close to being able to meet the demand of ubiquitous mobile internet.
Its not just technorati and business people who will use it EVERYONE and EVERYTHING will use mobile from people digging holes in the road to environment monitoring sensors.
YouTube row reflects online minefield 08:56am on 10 Mar 2009 This is a problem much wider than the music industry and applies to all online content. There is a decline or little growth in traditional channels and content providers try to apply old business models to the web to offset the loss which wont work. The web is a "Long tail" model with lots of tiny transactions adding up to a lot of revenue from low yield targeted adds with the service free to the public to get the massive volume needed to make it work.
The Music industry and others like the Ordnance Survey (UK Maps) are shooting themselves in the foot and putting a big break on the new digital economy.
Begging for Broadband 4:03pm on 03 Jun 2008 A survey of broadband speeds is a great idea and one that the reach of the BBC makes into a quick and viable idea and also very topical.

There is one issue which I think is also relevant which is that many people for cost reasons opt for a lower speed package which may skew things in certain areas. This raises another key issue which is not maximum speed but actual speed versus what your ISP promised. Also upload speed is often a fraction of download (1/8).

PS Is it just me or do others find the ISP's use of MB (also megabyte) for download speed rather than Mbps (Megabits per second) misleading. (Implying a factor of 8 increase)
Obeying the law? 3:30pm on 03 Jun 2008 Disable bays are essential but wasteful as most of the time they are empty particularly outside superstores and shopping centers.
On buses the wheelchair space is rarely occupied by a wheelchair user but very often by parents with children in pushchairs who then give them up if a person in a wheelchair gets on. This is a good use of a resource which provides another benefit to parents who would otherwise be prevented from traveling with young children.
Perhaps something similar could be done with disabled bays? Perhaps a way could be found for them to switch use depending on how many were occupied by the disabled always leaving one or two spare for newly arriving disabled drivers.
