Now I am reminded of why I stopped posting here for months.

I was not speaking in general but only to Habitualhero regarding dispute. Perhaps you had some difficulty reading the first part of my post.

Colonelartist:

I grieve for my child lost in Iraq, my brother lost long ago in Korea, my brother wounded in Vietnam and for every other person lost, wounded and damaged in violence and stupid wars. I need no special days for remembrance. The grief and loss live in me and mine.

Peace to you and yours.

I despise war, killing, torture, corruption of the human spirit and all those who espouse such evil for power or political gain.

Continue to beat each other and me with words. Perhaps that is better than rocks but remember that you really should eat what you kill.

I am finished here.

You must be new here. I am an American and I have mentioned this here more than once. "War is not healthy for children and other living things." Unfortunately we do not have accurate body counts for all the men, women and children killed there but the numbers are massive. I consider them more than "no-one" They were all someone, with families and people who loved them.

All I wish to do this day is grieve and remember the dead. It is not a day for politics or dispute. Peace be with you and with yours.
Military losses at home and abroad 7:25pm on 11 Nov 2009 I grieve this day not only for my own personal losses in war but for every man woman and child who has died from violence of war. No politics, no petty arguements, let us just remember our dead and also those who have been maimed in body, mind and spirit by the countless wars that we seem unable to stop.

I ask this day for peace and let it begin with me. My thoughts and comfort to all who grieve for loved ones and friends this day.

I am born here in 1929 from immigrant parents. You have told these here how it was then but most probably will ignore your words. I do not because I also remember. Be well and live long!

You have kicked over the rock and opened the closet door to the pernicious blights of racism and bigotry that continue to poison discourse in the USA.

Fear of the Other, the Alien, those different from ourselves is a rotten stench many try to cover with the false perfumes of denial and the meaningless rhetoric of extremist mantra.

Yes, some fear President Obama not for his politics or his plans for the country but because he is of mixed race and he is Other. It will not matter what he says or what he does, some will hate and fear him for his color and heritage.

The election of our first President of color gives us an opportunity to finally face our fears and our prejudices. It will remain to be seen whether we grow in grace, wisdom and compassion or cower in corners hissing and spitting.

I offer this post when I am working out of the USA in a place where I am not able to easily respond to debate. I will try to check back at another time if I can.

Thank you, Mark Mardell for your honesty and for your thought provoking comments. This blog has really needed that.

Thank you for that information. I must read up more on this. I understand that MIT has developed a prototype of solar panel that can be easily attached to existing windows to provide power for buildings. We have the sun here and the wind. It is time we used it!

I am not knowledgeable about all of these things. I live with the sun on my face and the wind in my hair. It is all energy that could be used by so many.

That is an excellent observation.

Given the extensive geography of the US, our regions of sun and wind, we should have been supplying this entire nation (and a few others) with clean, green power for the last four decades.

Will we finally do this? Can we stop all the stupidity and do it now?

I would hope and I do ever have hope!
