Far too simplistic and not always so.

There are many companies that were viable and well run but where demand has fallen dramatically, are not currently viable. Many of those should restructure and if necessary, borrow to cover costs until demand picks up. That's called sensible investment.

If demand is NEVER going to pick up..... well no one has an answer for that do they ?
It doesn't matter much to you or me 6:38pm on 05 Feb 2009 Sorry Andrew but it matters to me! I've a tracker mortgage and all the cuts are being passed on.

I really do need it and it really does help so please don't knock it; those who need these cuts need them probably more than those who have savings and like the rates high.

Bankers have behaved like unruly kids left alone in the sweetshop and they should be forced to put it all back... right now!

Bankers and responsibility 11:40am on 30 Jan 2009 It's daft to assume that 'bankers' have not learned from recent experience. If anything, they're so frightened, they don't want to lend at all and these guarantees will be necessary if business and the consumer is to prize even the minimum for recovery from their now over-miserly grasp.

The drug analogy is not a good one but to continue in the same vein (no pun intended) - they're off the dope and won't be touching it ever again (although some regulation needs to be in place to make sure they're not tempted at some point in the dim and distant future).

What nonsense!- two wrongs don't make a right!

If it's these wild swings that cause problems then they need controlling. Market forces are not the forces of nature - if they are, then the FSA may as well not exist. Short selling by 'borrowing' shares should be banned and our cleverest financial brains should find a way to moderate the excesses of the 'manic investors'. I don't have the answer but it sure as hell isn't short selling!

Many months ago when I suggested here that the BoE should bypass the banks and lend direct at low rates, Alexander Curzon said that the Co-Op may already served that purpose.

With tax payer ownership of RBS it looks like we now have both options!
