England lack cutting edge 08:48am on 14 Jul 2008 The Test match is heading towards a draw. One would not have thought so before the beginning of day four. To avoid the embarrassment the African had to give no chance to Monty, and how well were they equal to the task. On the last day the turn around for England can only be fetched by Monty.
Graeme Smith and Neil played innings in the face of an innings defeat and should be given all credit lest the visitors finish the job. that at the moment seems more than probable.
With this performance now the Africans will come back hard at the hosts. Life would not easy now on for England as it had been against the Kiwis. Well, they had a clear advantage and opportunity to do the same to the Proteas but let the latter go off the hook. I would be very surprised if England go on to win this series after their failure to demoralise South Africa.
Andrew Flintoff will any day make the XI. I think England are too fastidious in their approach. People with extraordinary talents do not get back into form by playing in insignificant matches. Virender Sehawag is a case in point. After being shown the door a little a year ago he was told by the selectors to get back his form by playing in domestic competitions and he came off wretchedly. So such ploy does not work with players with special abilities, I guess.
The only worry with Flintoff was his fitness, and with all people close to him vouching for his being fit, he should be brought back into the team before long.
England must put things in order before they take the field for the second Test otherwise they will have nothing to do but wringing their hands in despair.
Man Utd should sell 'slave' Ronaldo 09:32am on 13 Jul 2008 Finally ManU are tasting their own medicine. Anyway, the efforts to keep Ronaldo with the club may turn out to be futile at the end of the season -- lest they succeeded. There is no point to hold a player whose heart is somewhere else. Time has come for Ferguson take a call on this long-standing crisis. The writer is right in saying Ronaldo's departure will not affect the club in a big way.
Holland show the way forward 06:44am on 14 Jun 2008 What a player Arjen Robben is! I do not know why he is less celebrated than others around not half as capable. He runs like a gazelle; his dribbling is no les than those of Brazilians; and his shooting prowess defies his midfielder tag -- he is as good as any striker.
I think I know why, probably because he does not want to hog the limelight -- a quality common in all troubadours of the game.
Also another point could be is his looks do not resemble with that of pretentious Becks; his hair is thinning as well; and he looks older for his age.
I do not care what the stellar pundits around the world think of him, for me, he is a true genius tailormade for big stage.

Stanford brings riches and headaches 8:03pm on 11 Jun 2008 Well, there is no doubt that it is more money than cricket. Also everyone would love to see England v Windies than them against an all-star XI. The ECB has taken up the gauntlet thrown by the BCCI through Standford. Just like the bonsai format this money battle is here also to stay. It all looks very exciting at first but in a long run it will do the game harm.
The new developments got be checked by the ICC before the loss becomes irreparable.
Pietersen spares England's blushes 07:11am on 06 Jun 2008 It was a good innings from KP; it came at the right time. Any innings played from 80 odd for 5 is worth praise; however, one has to take into account the docile pitch and a out of sorts Kiwi bowling.
It was nice to see KP back among runs. It was due for long.
With a 1-0 lead England are in the driver's seat but to turn the result in their favour they need to go past 350 today because then their bowlers would be able to rattle some nerves in the average Kiwi batting.
I think Collingwood unnecessarily has become the talking point. He has got a smart head on his shoulders and he will come out of this patch very soon.
More he is scrutinised, the more is prone to buckle under pressure.
Though I agree with Mr Agnew that the player should have played the county match. He, anyway, doesn't have a great technique. He is a lobourer and he must try to labour hard at the crease than spending futile times with Andy looking at his batting flaws.
A Bolt for athletics' blues or same old story? 10:41am on 03 Jun 2008 Yes, very true. After what we all have seen in the last few years in track and field, such performances should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Drug abuse is prevalent and that has taken the sheen off of events such as this one. You do not feel the excitement anymore as was the case earlier.
IPL leading cricket's revolution 09:31am on 03 Jun 2008 IPL is certainly here to stay, that is alright, but thing to worry about is the prospect of four or five such leagues in a year. If IPL gets space on the ICC calender then the governing body would be not able to deny others.
I have got bored with this format.
If we keep seeing such bang-bang cricket then the fans will not stay, of that I am sure.
I am crammed up and no more I can take of it.
Mr Bose who has written one of the best cricket books I have ever come across- A Maidan View, of late has been writing panegyrically about IPL and all times he has failed to take into accout the excess aspect of it.
If next year just after the IPL another league, maybe in England, begins then many fans will bid adieu to cricket.
ICC take note of this. It is not all that beautiful,
