Introducing green cuts 12:59pm on 24 Nov 2009 If all the old buildings in Whitehall were closed, and staff moved to modern office buildings I can quite easily see huge savings in heating. As the old buildings are listed it is unlikely they will have double glazing, ceilings will probably be upwards of 12 feet high, insulation probably non existent...

But it seems like sound bite politics or more likely a distraction from other news. I see Andrew Neil's blog is opening up a serious debate on the environment. Probably explains why currently it is a troll free area.

"Does he know what a cooling tower looks like?"

On October 19 2009 on the Daily Politics show, in your interview with him, the background picture showed cooling towers and naturally enough there were clouds of steam at the top (water droplets to be more precise).

Yet the Environment Minister clearly said that "global warming was caused by the burning of fossil fuels as the picture behind you shows".

Although your blog concentrates on the environment, it is also not so different from a previous blog citing sloppy journalism. The internet has transformed debate as more of us are able to seek different sources of information rather than be fed the pap that emanates out of the MSM.

Opinion makers in the MSM are also being made to look increasingly foolish when their views do not come to pass. A bit of thought on the matter, even if you are not a scientist, may give you pause to reconsider. The hacked e-mails are damning but so is the lack of transparency for the institutions involved.

The thing with change is that the world is evolving all the time: tectonic plates shifting, new islands created through undersea volcanoes erupting, eco systems adapting to man creating new hydroelectric dams with huge lakes appearing where there was none before.

I would much rather the care for the environment focus on air pollution and pollution spills. Another blooger here repeatedly warns of potential oil spillage, yet governments only want to target the small people. Certain industrial processes use poisonous chemicals such as mercury which if used unchecked will have serious implications for the food chain. Of course when the politicians are mostly thick, perhaps the "Carbon footprint" term is as scientific as it gets for them.

I stand corrected. According to wiki the tax paid during the Napoleonic wars was on an income of GBP 150 and above (equiv GBP 117,000 in 2007). That tax ended after cessation of hostilities. It resumed in 1842 to the present day. Clearly the threshold at which you start paying tax has fallen somewhat over time.

Couldn't agree more. In fact we have been systematically robbed since WW1. Income Tax was only introduced as a TEMPORARY measure to pay for the war. Several million potential tax payers paid with their lives as well.

You could say this is when the rot in politics started.

This horrific accident in Sussex is a classic of poor administration, non existent quality control and where things are going wrong on an almost daily basis.

I fell on my hip a few years ago so I had to use crutches, and I was not very happy having to cope with gap between platform and railway carriage. I had this experience with some Underground lines and Southern Region railways - even an able bodied person has to be very careful. There is absolutely no way a person in a wheelchair could cope. Is there no one in charge?

Something very noticeable was the way the BBC dropped it's editorial policy of not mentioning individual poll results on yesterday's evening news. The newsreader was almost ecstatic in crying "Tory poll lead shrinking!"

Is it also not the case that there are too many telephone polls taking place at the moment. I was suckered into one a few weeks ago, and was told that it would take just 5 minutes of my time. It eventually dragged on for about 15 minutes with an endless list of tedious questions, at the end of which I was royally hacked off and not really caring about what answers I gave. Near the end they asked about likely voting intentions etc.

A lot of the questions were very intrusive and they really did not need to know such information. If all surveys/polls are conducted like this I would not have much confidence in the raw data quality. And those questioned will very likely not have much goodwill to participate in the future.

The air fares between Brazil and Britain are expensive, so maybe the reduced compensation is another way to deter future claims/inquiries? A cynical view perhaps, but justice clearly has not taken place.
