Second Ashes Test - player ratings 4:14pm on 21 Jul 2009 Spirit Of Oz, I dont think you quite dug out that yorker from GHBRich but I am sure he has, as I do, plenty of respect for you and the playing Ozzies. I played league cricket here for many years and dont remember particularly clapping the opposition captain in any more than any other player so maybe we are recalling cultural differences rather than a genuine lack of respect. Ponting though has bought some of the nonsense you hear upon himself but the tougher the opponent the greater the respect he gets. When the man retires you will get plenty of column inches acknowledging that the man was in charge of the greatest Auusie era.............but now the game is on...........it's going to be tough cricket ahead and there will be lots more talking points ahead. Maybe yuo should conduct a marks out of ten for Ponting as a Captain just so we keep in tune to the origins of this blog.

You are coming across as whinging.......surely not? Ponting had been in charge for years of a team that mastered sledging and has a reputation for it. He has become the panto villain for this reason and this reason alone. It is not in the Brits cricket culture to do the same (altho we are learning)
I agree Ponting captained as well as he could in the face of some trying times and showed graciousness in defeat.(Maybe Oz needed another all rounder in the team to help him out but that's your selection policy) In fact we know Ponting is a great player and I will do a little booing if it puts him off his game a tad........it's hardly death threats is it...........and besides Chelsea aren't England or remotely representative of England
Vaughan leaves lasting legacy 2:41pm on 30 Jun 2009 Nobody since the incomparable Barry Richards could cover drive like MV and that in itself guarantees his place in my memory. As for his captaincy it was as successful and as effortless as that cover driving. Such a shame to see such a graceful player completely lose his form almost overnight.
I will always wonder why...........

What now for cricket? 6:11pm on 03 Mar 2009 Imran Khan has been hugely disappointed with his country's efforts to protect the Sri Lankan cricket team and so he should be. Individual Pakistani ministers are afforded more protection and not to be able to organise sufficient cover for such high profile targets is shameful.
141 million dollars is mentioned in a TV deal and yet these guys cannot cover the basics.
The Pakistani government guaranteed the safety of their guests and they have effectively ignored the most fundamental of their responsibilities and quite possibly because of funding issues.
I do hope their shame at these frightening events motivates them to re invent themselves on the world stage as politicians of conscience rather than of self interest.
I do hope so as Pakistan could be cast to the wilderness for a very very long time.
Stanford parade raises serious concerns 5:08pm on 31 Oct 2008 Just a thought about 20/20 splitting cricket...........why dont we merge the tours into all forms of the sport.......a few tests, one dayers and some 20/20. (We should do this at home in the championship too). The point I am making is that the champions of the tour will be the total winners of all of forms of the game.....say 5 points for a test win 3 points for a one day win and 2 for the 20/20.
This way the spectators get a bit of everything and each form of the game has a bearing on who becomes the best overall cricketing side....the true champions. IOt will keep alive the interest of a tour or league for longer.
I think the major benefit will be that the gelling of all would prevent the split that is looking pretty ominous
Tottenham go back to basics 7:13pm on 26 Oct 2008 What sort of epitaph does Harry want on his career? If he stayed where he was and developed HIS team down at Pompey and developed the club in the way it has been progressing he would not only have claimed the Freedom of the City but he could have carved his own inscription on the monument of his footballing life. He reveres the likes of Ferguson and Wenger and wants desperately to be regarded in the same vein as these great footballing men. He was half way through the job and beginning to earn the respect that he craves. Now he has joined a team in trouble and a club in turmoil. It's all start again.Never mind whether or not they are abigger club the respect that he earns will be made on the football pitch and nowhere else.
Sadly I think Harry has shown himself to be wanting in his judgement on this and all he has done is just to add another club on to the list of clubs he has on his CV.
Harry if you were ten years younger then it would have been a good move.........I think you have just blown your last chance of being a footballing God...............certainly in these parts.
Beckham gambling in Milan 5:32pm on 22 Oct 2008 We have a whole bunch of exciting to watch wide boys in Theo, SWP, Drowning, Aaron and Ashley. These boys have pace and skill and get us off our bums to watch. My point however is that if you were a typical forward like Hesky Crouch Rooney etc it is only the delivery that you are after and no amount of razzle in wide positions will get you excited after an hour of failed final balls.
Now stick Beckham wide whose sole job is to ping the ball across and our attacking boys will always make those runs late in the game because Becks NEVER puts a bad one in. They will continue to attack them because there will always be a chance.
So to bring Becks on for the last half hour for the next coupe of years if needed will reap more dividends than the sour faced old hacks will ever be prepared to forecast.
Time for Capello to deliver 4:33pm on 04 Sep 2008 Couldnt agree more with starrychocmilkshake (please get another name I cant call you that in a pub). Joe Cole, Owen Hargreaves and Gareth Barry could run our midfield. Between them they are industrious and creative with a balance of left and right footed players attacking and defensive. Has anybody counted the number of times Gerrard gives the ball away in tight spots? Captain Fantastic he may be for Liverpool and I love his energy but he certainly doesnt run games from the off. He rescues games but as for conducting the pace of a game somebody please tell me when he, or Becks or Lamps, last ran a game like a Deco, Zidane or even a Scholes?
So stick those three in and play with two wing backs like Cole and Johnson outside them giving width. Play Terry and Woodgate as traditional centre backs and Rio covering them and the channels.
Choose your two favourite strikers (Rooney and ? ) and you have my medicine for the ailing English Football team.
Pattinson selection causes a stir 2:39pm on 18 Jul 2008 Hold on Goochy, how English were all your mates when they started their English playing careers? Surely the accolades they rightfully received came at the end of their careers AFTER they had given service to their adopted country. So in that respect give the bloke a chance.
As for the decision being leftfield I couldnt agree more.
Acadamys, central contracts, squads, team spirit............new bloke from OZ......
What does it do to the spirit of Chris Tremlett ? What a killer for the perennial number 12.
Sounds like the selectors want to make a big name for themselves with a wonder gamble...........
