Can James answer England call? 03:28am on 08 Oct 2009 Post 19 should have stopped after one sentence. James is an exceptional shot stopper. But to say he'll make one mistake a game is a bit tough, unless you count a slightly mis-hit clearence as an error. He's human so there is always the chance of a mistake but these days he makes less major errors than any of his competitors for the the England number 1 shirt. Indeed, post 11 has made a good point that as a goal keeper errors tend to get exaggerated and I think that this is the case with his 'calamity' nick-name which, let's not forget, was gained back during his liverpool stint some 10 years ago. He is a much more consistent keeper these days. Essentially, i'd agree with the sentiment of post 15. If you asked England's starting back 4 (Cole, Ferdinand, Terry and Johnson) who'd they prefer between the sticks behind them I think they'd all say James which is why Capello will have him in his starting line-up in S.Africa (injury not withstanding).

Not one negative comment so far and you'll be glad to hear that I'm not going to change that. After a few initial road bumps the BBC coverage is getting better and better and better (sorry!) Really enjoy the banter between EJ and DC; Martin's knowledge and insight is superb and Jake's enthusiasm for the sport really shines through. Add in no advert breaks, all the online stuff and the post-race forum with the excellent action on track and the BBC is doing an great job. Now just got to hope Jenson keeps it up! How much more likable is the guy than Lewis Hamilton?!
England player ratings 03:03am on 09 May 2009 Did this guy even watch the match? Wow his ratings are bad. Only 0.5 more for Jimmy A who bowled really well without much reward over KP who was basically a glorified cheerleader! Swann was the stand out bowler taking the big wickets and scored a very important 63 (or at least it seemed they would be at the time) as well. My ratings (not that anyone really cares)

Blood, guts and old-fashioned Six Nations thunder 05:02am on 15 Feb 2009 Ok lets take a deep breath here. First of all, Wales are becoming a very good side. As a few posters have pointed out England disrupted Wales usual attacking game-plan (and credit England, the coaches and the players for that) yet Wales still found a way to win the match and it was never in too much doubt, so credit where credit is due. However, those saying the Gatland didnt play a part are mistaken. England seem to get excessively punished through yellow cards for infringement at the breakdown and Byrne's tackle in the air on Armitage would have been a yellow if committed by a player in white. The better side won but MJ has a point when he says that refs are quicker to produce cards against England than other teams.

All in all as an England fan it was miles better than last week against Italy and a number of players put down markers for their shirts. Armitage was England MOM and Worsely was excellent. Enlgand looked far more threatening with Flood and Tait on the pitch and I'd like to see them start next week. England arent going to win the 6 nations this year so its about begining to build a team that can be succesful in the future.

Anyhoo, that's my thoughts. Good luck Wales for the GS. You're the best side in the Northern hemisphere at the mo and if you continue to play an exciting brand of rugby you deserve to win this year. Hopefully England can learn and build on this performance next week.
Canadian confidence to banish British blues 6:15pm on 19 Jan 2009 Excellent article, I hate all the negativity that has already engulfed London 2012. This is a once in a life time opportunity for London to show it's self off as a fantasitc city and for the British public to enjoy the games without the cost of travelling and staying abroad. Whilst China was extravegently run and certainly a success, the atmosphere at many of the events was poor. I think that if the public and politicians ditch all their negativity and really get behind the Olympics then London 2012 could be a massive advertisment for our country and an opportunity to showcase our passion for a variety of sports.
BBC reporters pick out their Olympics highlights 9:21pm on 25 Aug 2008 My Highlights: Becky Adlington's golds, Jason Lezak chased down Alain Bernard in the 4x100m freestyle relay, Phelps winning 8 golds and being an absolute legend, Usain Bolts unbelievably 100m, Bolt's even more unbelievable 200m, US mens volleyball winning an unlikely gold for their coach after all he'd been through(see lowlights), US gymnast Shaun Johnson finally winning gold in the final gymnastics event after finishing second 3 times already in Beijing.

My lowlights: Martin Rooney showboating in the 4x400m relay semi final lacked class and sportmanship (I was actually glad when we didnt get a medal in the final), Women's rowing quad missing gold was heartbreaking, as was David Davies losing his bearings in the 10KM swim, The stabbing of US volleyball coach mother-in-law and wife in a random attack. Liu Xiang pulling out of the 110m hurdles.
NBC's awful coverage - going to commercials in the middle of Adlington's swim, showing nothing but beach volleyball and gymnastics...etc

Star of Beijing: Michael Phelps, amazing achievement, amazing guy. He's an absolute star. (honourable mentions to Bolt, Hoy)

Tip for 2012: UK to win 24 golds and take 3rd place.
Beijing, over and out - follow that, London! 06:02am on 25 Aug 2008 Way too many comments to read through, and I doubt this one will get read either but I thought id throw my two cents in.

Firstly, congratulations to the Chinese on hosting what was by far the most ambitious and stunning Olympics, certainly in my lifetime.

However, as I think is the main focus of this blog, there is no way that London can match it. The reason for this is that as a democratic nation our government is answerable to its people. Can you imagine the government trying to justify spending however many million on an opening ceremony, while a small but significant percentage of the country live in poverty, the NHS remains a bit of a mess and taxes are already high.

Conversely the Chinese people have very little say in how their government spends their money. Economic reforms in China have been exceptionally effective in reducing poverty, however over 10% of the country remain bellow the poverty line (2004 wikipedia) and i'm sure these people would have preferred an investment in poverty reduction or welfare services than a visually stunning opening ceremony?

The UK is by no means perfect but people have a say in government spending. Most people will agree that there are plenty of other more important things the money could be spent on than the Olympics. For this reason the games in London must be on a considerably smaller scale than Beijing.
An epic two weeks on the coast 03:51am on 23 Aug 2008 Didnt see any of it as I'm in the US and NBC Beach Volleyball and Gymnastics Network declined to show any of the sailing so its been the BBC live text for me. A big well done to all the sailors, the star class race had me watching the text updates on my computer hid behind the sofa! Sounds like Rob did a great job so well done to him too. HugeofWivey, you seen to be in a rather large minority!
It's the winning, not the taking part that counts 7:35pm on 16 Aug 2008 wrong wrong wrong. It's not the winning, it's not the taking part, it just beating the Australians that counts. :-)
