Are 'broken families' responsible for 'Broken Britain'? 7:16pm on 03 Sep 2009 beautifulCanadianEd: If you were to believe all you read in the press then of course you would have an appaling image of the country. The Britain in which I live is one where caring people are found all around me in work and society as a whole. Also, I haven't come across many drug takers recently. Finally, I hardly think a few expenses makes us corrupt (we are the 16th LEAST corrupt country according to the CPI rating).
After the Ashes 9:30pm on 26 Aug 2009 "A country that still uses a mile that is 1760 yards, and 5280 feet, rather than a kilometer that is 1000 meters and 100,000 centimeters."

Yes, that's right. We have yet to hear of kilometers and meters on these here shores matey.

My oh my, all those years we missed out on such a luxury.

A reasonable question for a new member of staff I would say and hardly a relfection on the collective intelligence of 60 million folks.

Is Italy better than Britain? 2:28pm on 18 Jul 2009 So what if we are second to Italy on the tourism front? Since many people rate Italy as the most beautiful country, I would say we're just behind in second or third place.
Three years in China 12:02pm on 08 Jul 2009 Half of these posts are written by people who haven't posted in 3 years but then suddenly post. It's almost as if the same person is writing them and changing their story and style a little.. Surely not...

Conflict of party and private lifestyles 1:15pm on 10 Jun 2009 Those pictures simply show student life and it's actually quite refreshing to see a Chinese student joining the wider student community here.

A modest civil servant has enough money to send his son here, just as I have met the sons and daughters of teachers and administrators whose parents have spent many years saving 200-300,000RMB for their Masters here, so this isn't exactly shocking. I think you'll find the fees for Oxford are the tip of the iceberg and this guy will own numerous properties, cars, (black and German of course) and holiday abroad every few months.

What is interesting is the fact that many students are not actually here for the Masters at all, but for the chance to stay and work here and save some real money. That's why the British goverenment allow them to stay for two years: to keep the students (and their parent's hard earned money) flowing in.
Trying to get into Tiananmen Square 1:36pm on 04 Jun 2009 What has shocked me the most are the CCPs attempts to remove all mention of the anniversary from the mainstream media. I was beginning to think that the media had begun to get the hang of reporting an event with a specific slant that would strengthen their legitimacy (yes, yes the western media does this as Im fully aware). For example, instead of blocking the news of the Tibetan protests last year (as they may have done 5 years ago) they focused on a couple of errors in the form of mismatched photos and transformed China into the victim of biased foreign media reporting with huge success. This was genius, I must admit. However, when it comes to Tiananmen - complete silence.
