Nick Griffin on Question Time 3:50pm on 26 Oct 2009 I for one applaud the BBC on how they have handled the whole issue, they were between a rock and a hard place and were always going to upset someone. I think Peter Hain and others who did not want the BNP to appear on QT were plain wrong - like it or not the BNP are a democratic party and stifling debate is the action of a police state (I forgot, NuLab IS a Police state!).
The panel, with the exception of Jack Straw, gave Griffin a thorough examination of his party's policies and I thought Griffin came out of it very badly, and it displayed the stupidity of the BNP's policies. I think David D was also excellent, with robust examination of Griffin and others, that again showed Griffin for what he is, a bigot.
I do wonder if some of the critics writing on this site actually watched the programme, as I do not recognise the descriptions many of the critics are sating about Griffin being bullied and shouted down, it simply did not happen.
Is all publicity good publicity? 11:46am on 21 Oct 2009 The rise of the BNP represents a failure of the main parties to listen to voters genuine, non racist, concerns about immigration, which is brought in to sharp focus with today's ONS forecast increase in population to 71M by 2033, with "2/3rds of the increase directly or indirectly as a result of migration". Many people feel we live in an overcrowded island, and they do not want to see a further vast increase in population. Unless the mainstream parties address this concern then parties like the BNP will, sadly, get more support.
Personally I find the BNP odious, and I think the more people see Griffin squirming to avoid straight questions about race and the ludicrous policies they offer, the less support they will get. So let Griffin go on QT, and allow the people to decide. I for one have had enough of Nulab trying to proscribe every aspect of our lives.
Labour bets on bashing bankers 1:15pm on 28 Sep 2009 I run a small asset finance business, serving the small business community and more or less the first thing Lombard (owned by RBS) did after receiving trillions of pounds of tax payers money was to cut off businesses like mine, which has made it very difficult (and expensive)for many small businesses to get vital funding for vans, plant and equipment. Those left lending are doing so at rates of 8-9% flat! NuLab were so naive when handing out the billions, most of which has gone to shore up balance sheets, and on write offs that will enable big future profits on the basis of getting rid of all the dirty laundry whilst bad news was expected. What has not happened is new lending to good small businesses and it is a disgrace
Cricket misses the point again 10:15am on 02 Sep 2009 I was at Old Trafford last night and with the very heavy rain is was pretty obvious that the ground was going to be unfit, and I for one do not want to see a micky mouse game (T20 is micky mouse enough!). My only comment/criticism is that the game could have been called off mid afternoon - the cynic in me says LCCC wanted some money through the bars and food outlets, if I am being kind the ground staff and umpires were genuinely trying to get a game on. It's pretty tough on those that travelled a long way but a game played in those poor conditions would not have been "entertaining" at all - It was the right decision to call it off, just a little late in my opinion
Ashes player ratings 12:08pm on 26 Aug 2009 Agree with most of the above, I have rated Broad since seeing him in in an under 19's England game, but PLEASE don't heap too much expectation on him. His record is already better than Freddy's at the same stage, he needs more time to fully develop but clearly has the ability with both bat and ball.
Anderson looked out of sorts in the last 2 games, but is still probably the best swing bowler in the world on his day.
Prior had a great series and answered his critics in the best way with some brilliant glove work.
Harmison should never pull on an England top again, period.
Keep Bell, Trott obviously, but time to reconsider Colly. Onions should have played at the Oval and must tour. I am not sure Bopara has the technique for Tests, but probably should be in the squad. Cook is having a bad run and does need to work on the ball sliding across him, but I do believe he can pull through this patch and the selectors should stick with him.
Time to get Adil Rashid in the squad too...I don't think pace is going to get 20 wickets in SA, but a spinner that they haven't seen too much of might just be the trump card
SA tour will be a toughie, England are still building a strong squad and lack depth in batting and are need to find another penetrating quick bowler, but they have shown some grit and I think it will be pretty close in SA, but expect SA will come out just on top.
BT: A blacker pension hole 6:18pm on 30 Jul 2009 This illustrates perfectly the poorly thought out changes to the accounting standards that have contributed to the demise of final salary schemes. Pension investments and liabilities are by definition very long term, and should be valued as such - the pension pot value may deteriorate in the short term during difficult times, but will increase again in good times. In the past most pension fund trustees recognised this cyclical nature and did not insist on knee jerk extra funding the like of which has brought the likes of BT and BA to their knees. This stupid Govt's response to a few pension scandals has wrecked any chance most of the current generation of under 50's have of a decent pension, unless of course you are a fat cat banker or Public sector worker
Who'll boss our banks? 1:17pm on 28 Jul 2009 Anybody with any sense will be putting distance between themselves and Gordo before he gets his final goodbye (why did Sir Alan Sugar decide to get involved one wonders!)UKFI is a best a 2-3 post and I think it will be very hard to get someone of real quality to take this on right now

Not just any mess, an M&S mess 1:15pm on 07 Jul 2009 It should be remembered that Rose came into M & S when it was in a terrible mess, and looked like it was going to be sold to Green, which would in my opinion have been a disaster. Rose has done a good job and should be congratulated for doing so not castigated when the entire British retail sector is having a horrid time - I expect M & s is doing better than most and is still here which is more than it looked like being before rose came to the helm
