The Digital Economy Bill - does it add up? 1:50pm on 20 Nov 2009 The whole Digital Britain process was a farce and the main person to blame is Stephen Carter who came with a dud report and then quickly left the building to avoid getting the blame.

Most of the stuff in the Bill is never going to happen either - a new tax just before an election? I don't think so.

And the file-sharing stuff is pathetic. Labour are so out of touch that they don't realise that this is going to cost them lots of votes amongst the P2P crowd.
Why them and not us? 5:45pm on 23 Oct 2009 Steph, surely the other point is that the Japanese and German recessions were much sharper because of the inventory effect in manufactures? That is, their economies are much more reliant on manufacturing than ours and when a recession starts firms rapidly deplete their stocks which have a big negative impact on GDP. So Alistair Darling is not quite telling the whole truth. The reason why our recession is more drawn out is because our economy is in much, much, much, much worse shape than anyone else's.
Keatings and Britain step out of the shadows 09:38am on 16 Oct 2009 Well done Daniel, I was lucky enough to be there and we thought it looked a bit dodgy after the floor routine but you conquered your nerves, focused and proved that you are a winner, especially when all the pressure was on during the last rotation on the high bar. Uchimura looked awesome but keep working hard and when we see you back in the O2 in 2012 you'll be able to go one step further.
Will you pay for a Digital Britain? 6:04pm on 23 Sep 2009 This is entirely bogus. Labour want to set up a false dividing line between them and the Tories. They know the opposition parties will vote against the 50p tax and that it will hence run out of parliamentary time. They will then blame the Tories for failing to extend broadband coverage. The tax was always a non-starter.

Stephen Carter's legacy from his time in Government will be...precisely nothing. EPIC FAIL.
The what and when of spending cuts 1:03pm on 14 Sep 2009 Thanks Steph, you've made a very complicated subject much easier to understand. I think the battle lines in the election are becoming clearer: the Tories will argue for bigger public spending cuts sooner (and can argue that will help exports and private sector investment) while Labour will argue that public spending should be cut more slowly. As you say, the overall impact on growth is unclear but if you want a bigger state vote Labour, if you want a smaller one, vote Tory. Simple really.
Why did they do it? 1:44pm on 03 Sep 2009 #10 says that journalists should ask how many Scottish prisoners have been released on compassionate grounds. See link below. Relevant extract:

"Compassionate release is a regular feature of the Scottish system when a prisoner is near death. Of the 31 applications over the last decade, 24 prisoners have been freed on compassionate grounds in Scotland, including al-Megrahi. Another seven applications were turned down because the medical evidence did not support the claim."

Why did they do it? 1:02pm on 03 Sep 2009 Isn't it more likely to be a combination of factors. And don't forget the links between Scotland's oil industry and Libya. Making difficult decisions is what ministers are paid to do. I happen to agree with this one. I just wish that everyone, especially Gordon Brown, had been honest about what happened and why.
What the PM did and did not say 1:22pm on 02 Sep 2009 Labour is guilty of both hypocrisy and of not telling the truth. Hypocrisy because the party in Scotland has been opposing the release for pure political advantage when the national Govt has supported it. And still they refuse to reveal the truth about how and why the release came about.

I happen to support the decision to release him. But I wish the lies would stop.
