Central banks to the rescue 08:31am on 26 Sep 2008 The logic of propping up the weaker banks with this 'new' intervention may work.

Would it be sensible to suggest that this strategy might be to gradually allow the weaker banks to fail over an extended period, so there is no simultaneous meltdown ?

This would seem to be the safest way to let the weak banks go bust -and they will have to- otherwise we will be perpetuating the 'idiots' at the expense of the 'wise'. Eg the difference between Lloyds and HBOS.

We've got to let 'the market' or 'natural selection' get rid of those who didn't make the 'best' strategies. Otherwise we will be doomed to make the same mistakes again, only next time they may be bigger. And that would be really quite BIG.
Taxpayers recapitalise banks 8:50pm on 23 Sep 2008 Surely buying the toxic waste at this price will merely allow the party to continue as before?

The problem with house prices is that they (and the loans taken out) are just too high for people to afford. Shifting the debts associated with the bad loans will not correct the problem. It will merely defer it, and it will be worse when it happens again...

Unless the banks are put at the mercy of the market, they simply won't adapt to the future. Evolution aka selective pressure (not a popular theory in parts of the US of A) is the only answer.
California dreaming 12:47pm on 11 Sep 2008 Way to go, Jon ! You've discovered the other thing California is famous for - Airheads (in local vernacular). Whether they are born there or irresistably drawn there is not clear. But, there's a lot of them and they have the vote, but may confuse 'polling place' with 'pole dancing place'. We just have to hope....
