But how exactly can a depositor judge the credit worthiness of his or her bank? No one should forget it was not so long ago that the likes of Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae and AIG were all AAA rated (check out the 2004 annual reports). If the credit rating agencies got it so grossly wrong, how can the man on the street hope to make such a judgement? Or are we just suppose to all run along to our banks and withdraw all our savings when we get a bit nervous?

There is currently about a 3% yield on 10 year government bonds, so now is clearly the time for the government to borrow. Later on, when inflation takes hold and interest rates go through the roof, the government can buy its guilts back, quite possibly for a lot less than it sold them for...

Surely, the more we lend out to the likes of Northern Rock, the more interest income we will receive and hence the less tax we will have to pay!

Incidentally, I think the main problem with Northern Rock is its negative gross interest margin. Bank loans will turn bad every now and again, but paying savers more in interest than you are charging borrowers is pure madness.
The cost of bringing banks home 2:01pm on 14 Jan 2009 i don't understand why the Royal Bank needed to sell its stake in the bank of China. It has already raised £32 billion in the form of rights issues this year (£12 billion from its own shareholders and £20 billion from the government)! A totally enormous sum of money...

Surely however big the Royal Banks losses may turn out to be, they cannot be that big?

You really shouldn't write blogs like this. You scare people. I think if you just calm down a bit, these sort of problems will take care of themselves.

I mean you could write about the Libor. Every day it is getting closer to the expectation of the bank of England base rate. That is good news.

Why punish savers? 09:42am on 04 Dec 2008 Obviously it is utterly vital that the Bank of England continues to lend to our banking system at something close to the base rate.

It is a very dangerous proposition that you make, suggesting that we should all start saving to replace the alleged £700 billion withdrawn from the money markets over the past year. Such an increase in saving would obviously result in a proportionate decrease in spending, recking havock to our economy.

You should really do a bit of maths on that figure. Supposing the banks were to make a £100,000 loss per repossession, that would make the total losses next year as a result of depreciation in the housing market to be £7.5 billion, well within limits of affordability and well less than the total additional capital that the banks have been asked to raise.
