Kermode Uncut 2.0: Public Service Announcement 6:09pm on 17 Jun 2009 We definitely need some kind of 'quoting' feature, which would help develop more of a community spirit and promote more discussion.

At the moment it just seems to be random unconnected posts, but the best debate on here, notably the one on piracy, came about because bloggers were directly interacting with each other, which can only be a good thing.

My A-Level coursework revolved around the effect of the mass media on crime (hey I'm old and it was cutting edge then honest) and my own conclusions were that *anything* can provide a stimulus to an unhinged individual.

It could be a smudge on a fork at dinner, or an otherwise inconspicuous moment in a film, but anything can trigger someone to commit a heinous act such as this.

So yes, films can incite murder....but then so can any other factor. The trigger is everything, and all psychotic individuals have their own individual triggers.
5 Live: Jonas Brothers movie review 9:53pm on 05 Jun 2009 Agree 100 % kinell paul. As I mentioned, not being challenged in any way by art leads to a meandering,soul-less generation. The proof is out there - do acts such as The Killers or The Jonas Brothers inspire you? No. They are background music at best, yet these are the guys making the money and influencing future generations.

I am now officially old.
5 Live: Jonas Brothers movie review 4:17pm on 02 Jun 2009 Films of this ilk are far more dangerous than any so called 'video nasty' of the 80's in that they promote banality and averageness.

To say 'well it's fine if you are 14' is a massive cop-out and really does condescend the young teen market.

There's no reason why children of that age should have to accept the mundane, and it is entirely the reason why mediocrity breeds mediocrity, as evidenced by the 'music' scene today.

It's not snobbery - it's common-sense!
Press, politics and the art of going big screen 5:38pm on 01 May 2009 Speaking of all things 'Lynch' Mulholland Drive actually started out being a pilot for a television show,with a more inconclusive ending, paving the way for episodes to come. Having been rejected by the studio execs, Lynch rewrote the ending.

Two more things to say: The Wire is utterly outstanding in every way. Best television show ever made, and as culturally worthy as any film.

Secondly, I still think 'South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut' has been the most successful TV show to movie transformation. It was made when the show was at the height of it's powers, and it showed. It managed to make the leap successfully to the big screen, by utilising elements that would not have worked on the small, such as the musical numbers , yet remained faithful to the show, in a self-referencing way.

A show that consists of cardboard cut-out school kids swearing at each other, which becomes a multi-million dollar box-office smash, and leads to Oscar nominations, has to be up there, for me.
Online Movie Piracy: Sorted, no problem 1:51pm on 28 Apr 2009 dh2005: By watermarking, I didn't mean to imply a physical feature of the disk, but implementing a watermark directly on the video track itself.

A similar system was brought in to prevent the spread of 'telecine' bootlegs, where someone who has access to the projectionists booth can connect a PC or other recording device directly to the projector, and run off excellent copies of current cinematic releases.

To counter this a project called "CAP" or 'Coded Anti-Piracy' was brought in, which takes the form of digitally marking copies of films sent to cinemas, in slightly different ways, via multi-dot patterns in a few frames of the actual film, in a pattern unique to each theatre.

This enables distributors to recognise where bootlegs that end up in the hands of pirates originated from and take action.

I proposed a similar idea above - it would be impossible to remove via software as it makes up a section of the video, unless the bootlegger breaks into each individual frame to remove the code, which would be painstaking in the very extreme.
Online Movie Piracy: Sorted, no problem 2:38pm on 27 Apr 2009 dh2005: (this board needs a 'quote function') I propose some kind of digital watermarking, which is very easy to implement, identifying just which critic, or intended target of the screener, the leak has come from.

This would allow studios to quickly impose sanctions on said party, which could range from them stopping sending out said discs in the future, to prosecution for copyright infringements.

You will never get anywhere using copy-protection methods, as you point out yourself, as any device invented can by it's own definition be circumvented.
